I've got a savage x and upgraded to a 3 speed. Recently, the wheels have been slipping, i figured it was a bad friction bad on the back of my spur gear so i replaced it (it was pretty warn out). Still though when i hit the throttle, the engine spins the spur gear but nothing else moves until you bring the rpm's down then it jolts and will move until it stops or comes to a low speed. I'm not sure what it is. I took the tranny apart and it seemed fine. I also tightened the slipper on the spur to see if that was slipping and it didn't help. Not sure what to do from here :(.

Is there a one way bearing in the trans? That would be my guess. I haven't had my x for a long time so I can't remember

took it apart and i didnt see a one way in there. Its weird because it works sometimes and other times, you hit the gas and the engine just revs

There is a owb in the first gear, also when replacing it I would highly suggest replacing the center shaft as well. Oh and make sure the bearing says Germany not Japan. The ones from Japan are a bad batch

since its the 4.6 rtr, i still have the 2 speed tranny, could i swap out that axle with the gears on it? will it work and just make it a 2 speed so i can see if its that owb? It probably is but i just wanna make sure before i spend 20 bucks Thanks!!

Wait huh? If you suspect the tranny is slipping even with a locked or all the way tightened spur then it's the owb. If you have a spare tranny you could swap out center gear stacks.

If its the 3spd, you could pull first gear but if your not tuned right and not hitting 3rd it won't matter. IMO I'd buy the new owb and shaft.

i was gunna swap the shaft with the 3 gears with the shaft from my speed to make my 3speed a 2 speed to see if its that piece, that should work right?

The idler gear on the 2spd won't allow you to put the 3spd center gear stack in it. Also the 2spd and 3spd shafts are different.

Mine did the exact same thing on my savage x 3 speed wit a lrp 30 and come to find out it was the set screw in the the shaft that was actually stripped, truck would only move at low rpms once I gunned it, it would only rev up. I think u call it the set screw, in the yolk of the drive shaft, could be wrong I'm fairly new to this, but check it out.

Come to think of it, it could be a set screw on the drive line. Good catch buggybuster

I was just about to pull my tranny whn I realized thats what it was, only reason I hadnt pulled it cause I didnt know how to luckily, lol, I love this hobby the 2 years I have been involved I just have no patience for repairs. I have begin to do a lil more though.

It's definantly got a learning curve for sure, but hey if you got questions, ask. That's how we learn
