  1. Bashing
after a nice little day of running with my new 2.5r motor, at the end of my session, i heard a nice crunching/grinding sound coming from my Maxx, at first i thought the gear mesh had gone bad, and it was a spur/cb noise, but no it's my transmission. have not pulled it out yet, but when i turned the spur gear by hand, lots of clunking going on inside!!!!!! while i have tore down and fixed everything else on this maxx, this would be my first transmission rebuild.

1. should i just get a set of stock gears?

2. are their better gears to use as a replacement? (robinson metal gears?)

3. how hard is it to rebuild, for a guy trying it for the first time ?

It isn't a hard rebuild at all really especially if you take your time and follow directions well. The whole process can be found easily from both Traxxas and elsewhere on the internet. I would just replace the gears with stock gears if I were you. Unless you have done so already or have a newer Maxx I would suggest doing a FOC on the tranny while you have it apart. It really wakes the truck up, and makes it more reliable.

this tranny had the Foc, so i will be doing the same for the rebuild.

RRP would be the way to go to make it bulletproof but at the same time if you dont mind the rebuilding every once in a while you can save a boatload of $ by just replacing the parts with stock Traxxas.

tore it apart this morning...........looks like i found the problem !!!! new gears it is !

My forward only gears are plastic but my other gears are Robinson racing and what a difference. I also have the foc installed as well. I'm running an OS .18 with a Robinson 72 spur with a 22 tooth clutchbell and this is a first gen tmaxx. I'm considering replacing the foc gears to Robinson but if it ain't broke don't fix it. For me the hardest part of taking apart the tranny was getting the rear drive cup into the rear axle.

taking things apart is never my problem, it's getting them back together ! LOL! i always seem to have a spare piece !!!!!!!

Lol I did that to mine last week, altho u couldn't tell there was suppose to be teeth there :p

Topic of the weekend I guess. I blew out mine on sunday. The picco like to eat second gear. and output gears. I have yet to purchase a full set of Robinsons. It may be just me, but I would rather my tranny shell out than to have a diff go. And I just know as soon as I steel gear my tranny I will start tearing out diffs.

will the grey tranny for the 3.3. version, work as a replacement for the black one on a 2.5 ? or are they different ?
