Is it possible to have too much compression?? The other day I put on a new head for the 21BB engine and well I had a bunch of leaks. So I may have gotten a little over excited and re sealed the head button with a little bit of sensor safe sealant and tightened down the head bolts quite well. Now when I pull on my pull start there is almost too much compression. It is way harder to pull the piston over than before. Any advice would be appreciated. Thx

I agree with scottm, you should not notice any difference the way you did (i.e. stiffness of the pull starter) if the only thing you changed is the head.

Aslo, replace the gasket with a new one. I put a Nova race head on my stock 21BB and it had more compression than the stock head. it never ran as good. Cooler but not as good.

You almost always want to be careful when applying any kind of sealant between the cooling head and engine block. In fact, I recommend against it. Why? The heat may cause the sealant to fuse the head to the block. This would be bad. The other problem, you may get sealant inside the cylinder. This would account for the extra stiffness in the engine. You definitely want to take it apart and give the inside a good look to make certain that you didn't get any sealant inside the engine.

The sealant wasn't the problem at all. Ok when I first put it on I know I didn't tighten it enough cuz fuel wuz coming out of the head buttoin. So to proper tension this time without any sealant and it still had the same compression. I am only going to guess that the last head that was on there was the reason It was dying creating a lean condition since the head bolts were loose. Thanks all again for ur help I am truckin again. Late
