hi i was just outside tryin to drive my savage 21 when i couldnt get past first gear. its pretty cold outside about 55 to 60 degrees and it works fine until i get to second gear. it just dies when i reach second gear or just doesn't go. whats the problem? thanks
vince

yup same problem I was haveing........give 'er some go go juice, richen it up about 1 full turn and that should have you pretty darn close

Use the pinch method for low end adjustment. Put your fingers about 2 inches from carb inlet on fuel line, pinch off the fuel and it should stay running for about 2-3 seconds then die. As it is closing in on the 3 second mark the engine should rev up right before it dies.

Then for high end you should really use a temp gun to fine tune it in. If you do not have a temp gun, start out rich and run for atleast 1 minute WOT spit on the inside of the head. If your spit doesn't evaporate lean it out 1/8th turn and run again for a minute WOT. Continue to do this till you get the spit to evaporate. (This doesn't mean SIZZLE either) just turn to steam. Once you get it to steam turn another 1/4 turn and you should be right on the money.

Then re-do the pinch method after you have the high end complete and you should be good for the day, until the weather changes and you need to do it all over again:hehe:

Spit will turn to steam at 212 deg. F

***Note***
Small blocks should be 1/4 turn after steam
BB should be 1/8 turn after steam, unless running a Hyper 8 port then 1/4 turn after steam (they like to run hot)

Savage 21:

I was refering to running VERY rich to get the engine temp up, not at TUNED specs for a minute. As you work your way up to temp you don't run that long.

If you can hurt your engine at WOT at 212 deg. or less you are doing something wrong.

I was trying to help out the kids that don't have a temp gun have a consistant way of tuning there engine.

That is a very consistant way of doing so, your spit turns to steam at 212 deg., it gets you in the area, without ruining your engine.

i used the spit method at first cause i didnt have the money for a temp gun. It works fine( i got to 220 without a temp gun).

When it gets cold the air gets denser, so you will need to richen it up somewhat.
