i just got a used tmaxx and the previous owner installed an FOC. when i try to start it it gets close to starting but then the motor starts turning over but the ez start motor keeps running. i noticed that the spur gear only will turn if the wheels are turning and won't spin freely. any tips or suggestions would be helpful.

It shouldn't affect the ability of the motor to start, but the spur gear should spin freely in one direction, the other direction will turn the wheels. I would loosen the motor adjustment screws and pull it down away from the spur gear until you get the motor running, then reset the gear mesh.

As for the starting, pull the air filter off, the carb should be open 1-2mm (the thickness of a credit card roughly) with no throttle applied (check this with the both the TX and RX turned on). Try resetting the carb needles to factory settings, if it's the TRX 3.3 motor, the settings will be HSN = 4 turns out, LSN flush with surrounding area. If it's the 2.5 motor you might want to check the Traxxas web-site or the owners manual for the settings.

It sounds to me like its your one-way bearing. Its like the Ez start motor is spinning with nothing to hold it back? If so, I would check that out, if what MRClean said doesn't work. But I think its a combo of off tuning and dirty or worn one way bearing.

Both MrClean and flandersander bring up very good points and places to start. Also check your glow plug, make sure it is glowing bright with an igniter on it, if you are still using the blue wire to the glow plug, get an igniter, it will make starting much easier.
