Well I discovered the hard way if you install a 66 tooth spur gear with the 20 tooth clutch bell you will not get close enough to the spur gear to get a good mesh on the gears. Even though it seemed to fit tight enough during installation it strip the spur gear in no time at all.

To fix the problem I installed a 25 tooth Clutch Bell on my TMaxx 2.5r engine this should also increase my speed a bit. When meshing the gears I have found that cutting a small strip of regular paper about 2 inches long and a 1/4 of inch wide then pressing the engine into the spur gear will provide just enough clearance so you do not have the gears too tight together.

I will be interested to see how much faster it will run around the track.

The way to use the paper is to install it between the gears, what your looking for is a gear imprint when you pull the paper out without the gears cutting through the paper, I don't know that you should use the paper as shim to set the gap, I've always set the gears by feel, I have the same spur and clutch bell now for about 4 gallons and I don't have any problems with either

A 25 tooth clutch bell is way too much gear for a 2.5 and a 3.3 engine even with the stock spur gear.
You will most likely be going slower and cause the engine and clutch to struggle/strain/overheat.

Elongating the slots in the chassis for the engine mount adjustment would be a better fix.

I will certanally find out tomorrow if it is too high speed of gearing for the track I run at. The track I run at is fairly large with some really long straights and long sweeping corners.

Thanks for the advice I will be aware of the potential overheating and too much stress on the engine. I always check my engine temps so that I do not burn up the engine when tuneing and also the trail of oil smoke. Learned over the years never tune by tempature alone. Tomorrow only supposed to be around 50 degrees outside

I almost always used a strip of paper to measure the gap also do feel it out to see if there is too much play except for this last time thought the gearing was tight enough and did by feel alone. Maybe I did not have the block bolts tight enough. Used Blue thread lock to make sure that they do not come loose this time.

I will also be running my new Traxxas Slash 4x4 Greg Alder edition with a 2s 5000 LiPo battery pack and also the factory 7 cell battery pack tomorrow. I will be interested to see how this handles on the track since this my first Short Course Truck.

My Revo 3.3 conversion runs like a bat out of hell on this track and I can get it to full throttle on the back straight and keep almost full throttle around the long sweeping turn. Then at the finish line jump take that at about 3/4 throttle. Flys about 15 feet before it hits the ground.

i run a 18t bell and 72 t spur on my 2.5 maxx and find the combo to be a good fit. good power out of the hole and good top end. i agree with snook a 25 t seems a little high for the power output.

If I remember correctly from my Tmaxx days, the 66T was for the Emaxx. I tried different gear combos with mine and the 66T made it a slug off the line and the track didn't have enough straightaways to get it up to speed.
In a parking lot it was SCARY fast.
I believe 72T was stock for the .15 and still worked for the 2.5 but I ran the 70T at the track with great results.

Running the 25T Clutch and the 66 T Spur gear worked excellent over the weekend. The 2.5r did not hesitate a bit and spun the tires when taking off in the dirt. Top speeds and jumping were awesome. Coming out of the tight corners and hammering the throttle it would pull a front wheel off the ground. Did a few doughnuts and it spun in a very tight circle.

Friday night pulling the tranny out and performing a forward only conversion since I have not used reverse in years. This will be the fourth time I have rebuilt the tranny on this TMaxx over the 10 years I have owned it. The 2.5r is the second engine that has been in this truck. It originally came with a with the first 2.5 engine because it is the first run of the Wide Maxx when they came out. The 2.5r is out of my Revo 2.5r which I converted to a 3.3 when that engine came out about 7 years ago.

1st let me say that my post was not directed at you. It was meant for Rolex.
(By the way Rolex, I think it’s Awesome that you did run it!)

2nd, I’m glad you liked the 66/25 gearing, and it worked out for you.

Why don’t you post up some pics of that setup/rig when you’re bored, I always like to see a fast Maxx.
