A TiVo is this box you hook up to your TV. You might have seen comercials for them like 5 years ago where some guy was pausing his TV and rewinding it to see something again.
Then a couple of years back they had this comercial about this guy that wanted to see cop shows.
Their ads leave much to be desired, but the product just flat out rocks.
I've owned a TiVo for almost a year now. I use it to watch the shows I want to watch WHEN I WANT TO WATCH THEM.
At 2:34 AM i can turn on my TV, push three buttons and watch Monster Garage, if I wanted to.
If you're in the middle of watching something and you have to piss, you pause it. If you have to run to town, you turn it off and it remembers where you were when you come back.
The best part is you don't have to watch comercials!
I don't watch normal TV anymore. I haven't watched a comercial in more than a year. I have a handful of shows I tell it to record and when I want to watch them, there they are.
There some downsides to TiVo but you can upgrade (hack) them:
The default is to automatically record shows "you like". It's dumb as a post in this department, just turn that "feature" off.
It uses the telephone line once a day to update it's database of show times. (I installed the TiVo network card and hooked it up to my cable modem)
Can only hold so much because of space issues (I installed 2 80G hard drives and I've never run out of space)
At $300, they are kind of expensive (I bought a 14 hour TiVo on ebay for $170 and then did the able space upgrade and made it a 110 hour Tivo
)
Anyway, I've used my TiVo constantly since I bought it. It's really nice to do whatever I want when I want and not keep a schedule with the TV.
