I recently modified my Savage with some new toys. I installed the HPI three shoe clutch, the HPI dual disk brake, and performed the 4 spider gear mod on my diffs. Today was the first time running the truck with all three mods in place.

New truck...whole new ballgame.

I think the three shoe clutch gave me a little quicker hook up on the take offs. This is a good thing.

I know the brakes work a hell of a lot better than the stock brake set up. I took my first jump off a three foot table top, got maybe a foot of extra air between the truck and the ground, grabbed some brakes and made it 95% of the way through a front flip. Left a nice divot in the track where the nose skid dug in.

The diffs...world of difference. I actually had to work to keep the back end of the truck behind the front end. The loose dusty track condition didn't help much, but even so...my Savage rarely used to kick out the way it was on the track today.

I ran a few tanks with my JumboMaxx tires on. The truck was a little sluggish to get up to speed (I'll blame the dying batteries in the truck but think some of it might also be due to the 60K oil I used in the diffs) but it moved and made dust clouds as it slid through turns. Switched up to some Maxx Mashers and the thing started to fly a little better. The steering was sluggish (damn batteries).

All in all...the three mods are well worth it. Want to stop on a dime, dual disk brakes will do that...as long as the truck isn't going 20mph on a loose dust covered track. Want some quick hook up on the drive train, three shoe clutch will do that. Want some solid diffs with improved performance, the spider mod definitely gives that (I'm still marveling at those huge JumboMaxx tires kicking out on the drop of the hammer).

These mods are some of the best for the money honestly. LOL when I first did my diff mod I ran 100K and damn it was slow. Made it like a limited slip diff though. I am stoked I did it. Who doesn't like to stop their truck a little better. I haven't noticed a huge difference on the three shoe clutch yet.

iam am so happy, i am doing all of those mods next week, i can not wait!!!

Hmmm, differnt tune now, eh?

The last thing to top it all off, is a set of sway bars. No joke. I made a set for my savage, and it handles so much better now. I can actually get it to slide thru hard flat turns on dirt now, without excessive body roll, or worse yet, roll overs. I think GPM makes a set for the Savage (TRD Streefighter I think is running a set on his).

The GPM sway bars are sweet. I only installed the rears and it was a world of difference...

The stock brakes worked for me. These just work a heck of a lot better. So, not a different tune. Just a happy SkyMaxx. :D

As for the sway bars, I may need to think down those lines. For now, I'll just settle for the fact that the truck isn't broken after nearly four hours of fun.

Sky, have you done the MP servo-saver mod as well??

I did the MP mod and spider gear mod, but added them at the beginning of winter so I don't know what the performance gains will be like since I haven't run it yet. I was going to get the dual disk brakes, but now you got me wanting to try the 3-shoe clutch.

Darth the three shoe clutch is an awesome hop up to the SS, much better bottom end, I highly recommend it.

Sky, definately look in to the MP servo saver, what an improvement! Next up for me is the trottle linkage mod and dual discs. What weight oil did you go with in the diffs?

As noted in my initial post, I put 60K diff lube. The stuff I used is made by Team Losi.

And the MP steering upgrade does look like a good idea. That may very well be my next upgrade to the Savage.

The throttle linkage mod helps improve the stock brakes. I have been thinking about going with a dual disk setup for some time.

I completed a few mods during the winter but I haven't had a chance to run my Savage yet. I am hoping to get out of work a little early today and burn some nitro. :)

hey skymaxx, could you give a link to the brakes and the 3 shoe clutch you got?? i tried to look but couldnt find anything. thanks

What got you the extra air?

Three shoe clutch found at Tower Hobbies:
Three pin flywheel, collet, and clutch shoes

Dual disk brake set found at Tower Hobbies:
Brake kit

As for the spider mod, run a search on the subject or look at the forum index for the Savage section. There is usually an active thread on the subject on the first page of the section.

You didn't just ask this question, did you? It was a ramp. My truck went up the ramp at a pretty decent rate of speed. The extra foot of air came from the fact that it left the top of a three foot ramp at a little over twenty miles an hour in an upward motion.

It just seemed like you were implying that your new mods were getting you the extra air. My apologeze.

The extra air comment was to indicate that in about a four foot high flight path I was darn close to landing a front flip. That is pretty tough to do with any RC let alone a Savage as heavy as mine.

So the comment was on the sharp performance of the new brakes.

ok thanks skymaxx, but in order to complete the 3 shoe clutch mod, i need both of those parts right?thanks

That is correct. I tried to find the all in one bag deal that I got at my LHS and have not been able to track it down on line. Every search leads me to the flywheel and the shoes in separate bags.

The price is about the same regardless of coming in two bags vice one.

Sorry, I don't do eBay. That is a great point though. Shop around, you may find it less expensive elsewhere and eBay is a great source.

How much was the shipping? The price for both on Tower is about $17+shipping. The eBay shipping might just make this an even deal. :D
