this is the closest stuff to 10wt they had... is this safe to use?

I went to get some shock oil today. tried to get 10wt as the manual suggests for the stock plastic shocks but the closest they had was 25... then the guy started saying that 10 was too thin to do anything, that it was useless and that 25 would be ok. when I asked him about the risk of popping the plastic shocks due to the extra viscosity, the guy that stuff like that happening is a load of crap...

I am convinced that guy is full of crap himself (especially when i asked about hump packs and he said nobody uses those things anymore...) but that's for another post... anyway, my question to u all, who I trust infinitly more, is this stuff safe to use with the stock plastic shocks? what difference, if any will it make?

I'd really appreciate a replies asap... I just finished my exam period and am dying to get my truck back into action...

The stock shocks should be able to handle up to about 30-35 weight oil/silicone without worrying about popping the caps (except on the largest of air...then anything goes). I would say that 25wt should be just fine. You might consider using a piston head that has two or three holes vice just the one. That will help with the viscosity and water hammer affect when taking huge air landings.

ummm.... i've never redone shocks before.... would I need to buy a new piston or can I just drill the holes myself? also, what does thicker oil do? if it can take up to 30 - 35 should I go exchange this bottle of 25 for 30 or 35 then?

I really just do some light bashing, nothing really with large air

The silicone/oil in the cylinder controls the speed with which the shock moves. It is the dampener. If you use really light oil, then the springs of the shock do all the work. If you use really heavy oil, then the cylinder does all of the work. A mid grade weight allows the cylinder and springs to work together.

You may find when you open up the shocks, to empty out the old oil, that the piston head has more than one hole. If not, you can purchase piston parts or a rebuild kit through most on line hobby shops or at your local hobby shop if they have parts for the Savage. Heck, if you bought it new, you may find a baggy of spare parts that has some different piston heads in it.

I would recommend not drilling your own holes, but you can try if you like.

As for shifting oil weights again, I'd say try what you have. Just because the shock can handle up to the 30-35 wt oil does not mean you absolutely have to run that heavy.

if you dont do any heavy bashing 25 will be ok. But if your going to be doing lots of jumps i would put heavier oil in.

I run 50wt in my stock MAXX shocks which i think is a lil light for me so I'm thinking of going to maybe 65wt

Haven't popped a shock cap yet? Then here is someone who can prove the limits are sometimes imperfect.

nope not yet and I've been running like this for a while i have alum caps in the rear due to the hard rear landings i take but never popped the fronts either.

I'm with them. 25 sounds good for what your gonna be doin. I just filled my MSR5's with 30 which honestly is probably a tad heavy for what I'll be doin with it, but better save than sorry...

... as for 65wt oil... holy crap, I'm curious what rate springs your using?

I'm using Trinity black springs theyre the extra heavy ones or whatever theyre called

cool thanks for all ur help guys. I just got a bit worried cos I kinda remembered someone saying that if u use too heavy a shoock oil u'll just pop shocks. just wanted to be safe. =)
