I was starting my savage today and after the engine started I pulled the roto start out and it kept spinning. I tried slapping my hand on the side of it (it has always had a problem with the switch sticking in the on position) and when I did it broke. Now I need a new roto start tool. Any recommendations?

Cordless drill worked pretty good for me when I ran the roto. Just make sure you have it on reverse setting.

had the same problem Geardigger. I took the rotostart apart and found that the solder on the leads at the switch had actually gotten hot and melted together making contact and bypassing the switch... i resoldered the leads and all is well.

DO what Sweetdeisel said and get a nice drill. Don't break the bank but a decent drill. The rotostarts are notorious for it. I can fix em . the switch is weak.

I have a very nice dewalt drill I have used in teh past while waiting for the rotostart to charge. I didnt keep using it for fear of breaking the one way bearing. But I shall use that again seeing as other people seem to be ok with it.

Thanks guys!

Go easy on the drill. Start off on the slow speed if need be. The drill may over spin the rotostart.

I'd recommend a drill or a pullstart. If you go the drill route make sure it's a high speed. Also make sure you set the clutch on the conservative side. Otherwise, the next time you hydrolock - you'll ruin the engine.

Also, you'd be surprised how freeing a pullstart can be after the engine is broken in. You can't lose it and the batteries never need charged.

Amen to that! I don't think I'll ever go back to rotostart....

i have a brand new roto start sitting right here that i think i'll never use. i like the pull start. prime her up, trim open the carb and 3-5 pulls and shes fired and ready to bash the desert.

no just take motor out, take roto start backplate off and put pull start on.. i think its like three screws but make sure you locktight them.. then mail me the backplate cause i could use it on my buggy lol.. if you got any questions let me know..

Take the roto start apart and remove the red push button. that will leave a white pin button to press. The spring that retracts the red button is weak and does not last. Works great.

Nitro Stephen, too late. It is broke beyond repair. I have been using my drill to start it and that does OK. I am probably going to go with a pull start if and when I ever get this hunk of junk running again.

could you send me the roto starrt and plate when you get finnished?? ill pay shipping..

drill works great! try and get a drill with a torque setting. that way you dont put wear on your oneway. havent blown out a oneway on my savage or mgt yet.
