Just as a heads up on this new package. Not only do you get all 6 gears and cross pins, but they are also including 4 machine screws to replace the stock ones. I guess HPI listens to their customers. I wonder what they have the for the savage next???

man you should post up a link as I have read wuite a few people are interested in this!

I'm definitely getteing that for my ss kit, If only i can sell my maxx thats all I'm waiting on. Iv been shoping for my list of hopups and its complete now. great thread.

Well now, in all fairness, someone else did point this one out to me on this site so I can't really take credit. Credit goes to olds who posted it in this thread.

*edit* This kit also works for the R40.

I also got a set of these from Tower. I'll post some results as soon as I test them this weekend. Hopefully they will hold up much better than the last time I did the 4 spider mod with the stock gears. The bigger problem is the plastic diff case is just too soft and the crosspins wear a groove into them.

Yeah, I noticed the cross pins going before the case though and to be honest, I dont think these pins will hold any better. Those gears look to be far from kind on the pins. Maybe they sould upgrade those next.

have you guy tried to look into a different case? One that is a tad larger?

Well, Hot Bodies makes one for the lightning that should work and is a much harder plastic than the HPI case is. I am waiting for my LHS to get them in but I doubt I will get much use out of them til spring time so I could not really tell you til then ho wmuch better then are.

do you only need one set or do u have 2 replace both sets for this to work right

You need one set for each diff.

I just did this 4 spider mod on my SS, it is the first thing I have done before I started to build it. Anyway, one thing I noticed is there is almost no way you can reuse that gasket in there without damaging it to clean all the old grease off thoroughly, good thing I bought extras, and its tough to get good leverage screwing those 4 screws back in, other than that it went smooth.

so are the Hpi bevel gears the same as the Spider mod? which one is more reliable. and arnt the aluminum diff cups worth trying?

Yes, this kit just saves you spending extra money and buying more than one package to do the mod. As for the aluminum cups, I have yet to hear how well they hold up.

I noticed my gears from the HPI kit did not look shiny silver like the pictures from the website. They looked just like the regular gears HPI sells in their two pack. Also the crosspins that came in the pack had cuts in them that were too wide, there is too much slop if I used the HPI pins, so I kept using my OFNA pins. They did however hold up to all my bashing this weekend which either says they are better than the original or I'm just getting better at landing jumps. I have a feeling I'm just getting better at driving.
