I bought a temp guage a little over a week ago, but never ran the truck until yesterday. Yesterday was in the 70's here, probably 20 degrees warmer than any day I've run the t-maxx yet. Truck seemed to be running fine, trail of blue smoke, idling fine... but it did bog down a couple times about the time it was shifting. I checked the temp and it was 372. Richened it up some (lsn) and the lowest temp I read was 322. I bought the truck used, never needed to mess with tuning until now. I've set the hsn to flush (was 1.5 turns in) and the lsn to about 3.5 turns out... should be about stock now, right? Trim is just to the right of 0. Anything else I need to adjust before going out to try it?

Does it sound like this thing was out of whack? I didn't count the turns I made on the lsn originally before turning it back 3.5, but it seemed like it was more than that.

Well reading that your tempsare 20degrees hotter, I say your tune was wrong. You need to adjust these little engines constantly for temp changes. Try bringing everything back to factory on your needles. Then tune in this fashion. Set your idle so it is at about 1mm open and doesn't shut when you hit the brakes. Verify this while the engine is off and the air cleaner is off so you can verify the opening. Then with the engine on and air cleaner on, tune the Hsn needle for the best top speed but doesn't sacrifice a nice trail of smoke, cutting out at the top and your temps are below 275F. Unfortunately that is where more most of the tmaxx engines tend to live. They run hotter but run better there. As far as tuning, once the HSN is done move to the LSN and tune for the best acceleration without sacrificing smoke trail and cutting out under power and of course your temps should not exceed 275F. Tune each needle one at a time. Then drive it for about 1 min around.Temp it and judge for yourself what is ok. FYI this is all noted on the little Traxxas tuning card you get..

I'd say your were out of whack. It sounds like your HSN was set very lean and your LSN was set pretty rich. Depending on the settings, this type of setup can be very deceiving. You may get good smoke through the low range but then the mixture will be very very lean up top. Without 'temping' it you may think you're tuned good because you have blue smoke and good power. This sounds VERY familiar to me. Was the engine ever hard to restart when it was up to temp?

I took the temp over the glowplug.
The engine has always taken a few tries to start. When warm though, it usually doesn't have a problem re-starting.

I went out and ran it a little bit, didn't get it tuned before the rain started though. I had it running pretty rich. I'll set it back to stock and try again tomorrow....weather permitting.

I couldn't see any change when adjusting the idle screw, might just be my eyes, but is it very noticable when you adjust it?
