Try this: http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/prod...pid=03482327000

Sears has a couple others, but they are more expensive. I have been using an older Craftsman for a couple years now, and it works perfectly. Basically, though, the temp guages are only made by a few companies and re-branded. The duratrax guage is the same as two or three others on the market.

That's the same one I have it it works nice. The tip fits cooling heads real well and you can often find it on sale for $39...

The laser is nice if you want to do a quick spot check of the engine or exaust with the body on and I use it around the house and working on cars too...

Hey guys, my duratrash temp guage bit the dust. Anyone using this one? http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJSU4
I'm using it, I just got it to replace my TempGun.com gauge that grew legs at the track a few weeks ago. Seems ok, many of the smaller ones like the Duratrax, Atomic, and TempGun are all made by the same company just have different color cases and names.

Are the Duratrax and the Atomic the same temp guage? If so I'll just get the Duratrax. Seemed like a fair temp guage, but it took a pretty good hit and quit working. I like the size of the smaller ones, more convenient.
Thanks again.

I have the Duratrax guage but found out it isn't very accurate. Mine reads about 10 deg colder than actual temp. Out of three others like it only 1 was close (w/i 5 deg). They were tested against 2 professional temp guns that cost upwards of $90+.

Harbor Freight tools has 5 listed and I hear Radio Shack has a nice temp gun too. As far as the cheap-O's go, they are fine for break-in and getting close on the temps to keep from over heating your mils. But if you want to be accurate, you are better off spending the money for a good one.

A little hint to test the accuracy of your temp gun/guage. Get a pot of water and bring it to a boil. Check the temp of the water, and it should show 212 +- a couple degrees. My temp gun shows 211, consistently. It's a quick, cheap, accuracy check.

Well got to have one, so I ordered the Atomic today.
Any other ways to check one? Besides against a high dollar one?

Have to have a tach for the 4-stroke plane engines. If they rev too much it'll float the valves. First got my tach I pointed it toward a light. The light was turning 3400? rpm's. Thought my tach was screwed up. Come to find out that is how ya check it.

It's not so much of the accuracy as it is when you check the temp on the head it's a reflective surface. As is water, though boiling water or water with waves will cut down on that. You can take the temp at the GP and then take a piece of masking tape half over the hole and mark a black dot on it with a marker and take the temp and see if there's a difference between the two.
