Getting started on going through this mechanically. A lot of it is just cleaning. First thing that needs attention is the motor. I had something binding on the driveline. This is it.
Gonna have to open it up and see if I can track down some new bearings. Brushes are still good. I'll get it cleaned up and take a look at the windings etc while I'm inside. Hopefully this can be saved. I am optimistic at this time. ROAR 91 stamped, Precision Motor Works Madman's Nitro Express 540.

Solder joints need to be redone, and will likely change the motor wires for new while I'm at it.

Motor disassembled for repair. End bell held in with screws, and then crimped. I assume to be roar comp legal preventing tampering. Just bushings, no bearings. That will be taken care of. The retainers that keep the magnet in position, 1 definitely has issues. Lots of dirt built up inside which can be cleaned up easy enough. So far I remain optimistic on being able to revive this vintage motor. Windings look in fine shape with no need to redo anything.

Beautiful new solder joints and new wires

Look at it go!!

The screws on the end bell only hold down the contact plates. The crimping holds the can on, and looks like I was able to get all back together without issue.

With the motor repaired I got a futaba magnum Jr. Headed my way to preserve all the rest of the vintage electronics inside. Next to open the gearbox and see what needs attention inside. Feels good, but will need at least some new lube.

I have my Magnum Jr from way back. I don't think I could sell it. Its a great radio!
I was using an old Kyosho Tx and noticed range issues pretty quickly. I forgot about the challenges these radios have.
Awesome retro-build!!! 😎👍

Rx, esc, and servo are all futaba old skool in the car. Seemed like the right thing to do!

Hopefully I don't have have to reach out for how to make my own. Everything on mine feels great so far
It was a bit of a pain if I remember. Been years ago when I did it. But that plastic shaft has a tab on it that is easily broken.
