quick question. i have a starter box and dont really want a pull start and i was leaning towards a side exhaust engine(unless recommended a good rear for a good price) and was wondering if a pullstart kit can use a staerter box or is at any disadvantages

all you have to do is take the pullstart off and your good to go.

Like fridge said you can buy the blanking plate and take the pull start off and use a starter box with a side exhaust engine. If you want to you can also buy the non-pull engine mounts and fly wheel along with removing the pull starter and it will lower your engine just a little. Either way will work fine. Also with the pull start removed you can look into one of the low cg fuel tanks.

You can just leave everything as is and just drop it on to a starter box. I did that with my first pullstart engine after getting tired of yanking the starter cord.

I was able to use a crappy HPI 15 FE with the PS assembly and drop it right on the starter box. THen upgraded to the MT12 Non Pullstart. The NTC3 is very accomodating that way.

no no i mean use an engine without a pullstart on the pullstart model.

i hate pullstarts but i might use a side exhaust engine

so what i presume is the pullstart mounts are higher and the flywheel is bigger?

Yes the pullstart mounts are taller and the flywheel is larger. I blew up my AE engine but before I did I was using the blanking plate with the pull start removed and the stock mounts and fw with a starter box. When I bought a new engine I went ahead and got the non-pull mounts and flywheel. And yes it is a side exhaust engine.

IF you want to usethe engine "as is" with the pullstart still on, it can be done without modification. To use the same engine and do the full modification, delete the pullstart with a new plate, change the flywheel and mounts to nonpull. If you want to get a nonpull engine, you need the flywheel and engine mounts for a nopull setup.

ok then... so i should just get a rear exhaust and that would save me the money of having to buy a new fly wheel and lower mounts....(possibly save money?)
i dont really think i want another 12 tr but i want something with more power. any suggestions for around that price range?

With a nonpull engine, you need the nonpull flywheel (smaller diameter) and nonpull mounts (lower cg from height).

For an engine with power, at approximately the same price, the closest thing is the Sirio Evo2. For real power get an italian made engine. Rex, Mega, Top, Novarossi ... those are the engine's to really look at.

so thats what I'm looking at?

i dont care about the engine being race illegal

what about the black pixi in that price range,,, jeeze 190 is kinda high lol

if you don't care about being race legal, then don't worry about the # of ports or engine size. Stick what can fit in the chassis.

As far as price, you do get what you pay for. The Sirio is based on an italian block. It will outperform the pixie out of the box BUT the same car with a pixie in capable hands can outperform the best engines being driven by an inexperienced drver.

The rex, novarossi, mega, etc. are all based on the same block. It's the angle of the ports and journals that vary from brand to brand. Different companies go for different powerband placements. These engines will go for a minimal of about $220. Top end modifieds will reach over $300.

Me, I care about being race legal since I do race. Outlaw (illegal) engines are mainly for club races.

Buy your engine based on your skills (driving and tuning). Higher performing engines can give a novice-moderate tuner skilled person a headache and frustration.

i learned on a nova/hpi engine and i want to have a go at it again and i definetly want a rocket.... should i wait for the fantom .12 rear?

Get the Sirio Evo2 (3 or 5 port is good). Very strong engines. Make sure you get it with the SG shaft. Also get the corresponding sg clutchnut. I have seen the Fantom run in an NTC3. It was nice but have also seen a Sirio (3port) run in an NTC3. It has better performance all around. That's just my opinion. I personally run a Novarossi NS12S3 in my NTC3. My brother runs an RB V12. Both good engines. The NS12S3 is discontinued, but the RBV12 is a great performer and still available.

the lower CG of a nonpull on the NTC3 really helps in the turns and take off. It's not really noticable on some cars but on the NTC3, you will notice the difference. Another thing that I would suggest is getting foams for the car.

If you do the math and compare, the price is comprable. Depending on the foam brand, it can be even cheaper. The one thing that sets it apart is the "point and shoot" factor. More traction and better performance on the track. Just remember to look at the standard setting in the rear of the manual. The settings are different than rubber tire settings.
