Well, today was a nice day. Mother Nature graced us with a cloudless sky and temps in the low 70s. The ground was a little more dry than yesterday.

Sooooo, I decided to take the Savage out and try to complete my engine break in. Tank two through the Hyper did not go nearly as smoothly as tank one. I actually have blisters to show for my effort....so I guess I have to retract my no complaints thread.

I actually had to work to keep the engine running today. Finding the sweet spot on needle settings took a little thought. The break in wants you to set it extremely rich, and the weather called for an adjustment towards the lean side of things. Needless to say, the engine played at cutting out every thirthy seconds or so. I finally got the needles set the way I needed them to continue the break in, and the damn spring in my pull start snapped. (credit mjime714 for the link on the free replacement). Anyway, I recoiled/repaired the spring, and finished off another half a tank.

This thing is ready to rock, but it still needs a couple more "break-in" tanks of fuel through it. I now have another problem. I tried to go for tank three this evening, and came up against an engine that wouldn't start. New glo-plug, new batts in the ignitor, primed and leaned to give gas the right way...no start. Got pissed and decided to look on line...

Long glo-plugs, what difference would that make? How about "hot" glo-plugs (OS makes a hot plug)? Anyway, looking for a solution to my problem. Ruled out airleaks, flooding, hydrolocking, bad batteries, etc. Leads me back to the glo-plug...worked fine in my T-Maxx engine. So I must figure that I need a different type of plug. Since I use standards, that means either long or hot. Any recommendations (and yes, Christian I know the book says to use long plugs, but my standard carried the day fine for two tanks).
 
Well if you dont use the longs you may want to pull the shims if any are in there.

Also, try resetting the needles again and leaning in about 1/4 on the LSN and almost half on the HSN. This should get you running.

Man, wouldnt that suck if you had to go through all of this again if you swithced nitro % ?!?! (I had to!)

Already did the needle thing, and I am not changing fuel unless I have exhausted all other options. No shims to my knowledge on the engine. Will check to make sure.

But what's the difference? What does a long plug gain you? What does a hot plug do? I thought they were all supposed to be "hot" kind of the point...you know hot plug ignites fuel, makes things go.
 
The long plugs will 'fill' the combustion area more and be closer to the head for ignition. I've never heard of anyone running a short in a long button. Just think of what happens when you put a long in a short button! Bad bad bad!

Just switch it up and you should be fine.
 
Hmmm...okay. Will get some long plugs this week.

What does a hot plug do differently than the other "hot" plugs?
 
They just burn hotter. I think mediums are great for what you are running, although a hot might make it easier to break/in. Your temps will also run slightly higher so keep that it mind.
 
Okay...seems kind of odd that they make a plug to be hot and then come along and make a "hot" version. Maybe I'll experiment...get a couple of longs and long hots.

As for making the break in easy...after today, I'm all for that.

For what its worth,

A hot plug will advance the timing a bit.
It will cause the fuel to ignite sooner.
I used a hot plug in my fantom and it dropped the temps about 30 degrees.
 
Wow, ima put one of those long hot plugs in my 2.5 Fast eddy-do you know if it will fit good in a 2.5? Thanks!

I don't think its wise to use a long plug in a 2.5. I believe it may hit the head and cause issues.

You can get a short hot plug.
 
Just grabbed a couple of the Fox Gold Series Standard Long plugs. Hopefully, my engine troubles will be over...we'll see. Thanks for the information Çh®i§tiªñ.

All right, now I'm confused...the package says Standard Long, but the plug looks no different (length-wise) than the McCoy MC-8s that I use on my Fantom. Anyone care to enlighten me on this puzzle?

Does the length description apply to the coil inside the plug?

Awww...who cares. I decided to chance pissing off my neighbors...took the Savage out front and tried to fire her up. Primed the engine, one pull and we're off to the races. Next step tuning...

Thus proving that engines and glo-plugs do not run on anything but the time period of which they have been alive.:D
 
Today I was on my 3rd tank for the break in on the picco 26 and everytime I gave it gas it would die. I was using fox long plug with med temp. Checked everything else besides the plug cause it was new, finally pulled the plug and it still looked new and got red hot. So I said wtf, and tried an os#8 short and it fired right up and ran great. I thought fox plugs were good?
 
Man, the trivial B.S. of plugs! Its enough to drive anyone insane....

Yes, fox plugs are good, as are most, just depends on the mill you have. From one to the next the plug could be great or suck. 50% is knowing the temp and legth to run, the other 50% is luck. Oh, wait, then the lifespan of the plug. From 1 minute to 1 year. Who the hell knows.......
 
Tell me about it, I thought it would last longer than 2 tanks. Oh well, I guess trial and error is part of the fun. What plug would you go with or try for the 26?
 
Personally I like both the O.S. plugs and the Carbon Speed (DuraTrax) plugs. Thats all I run in all of my mills and have nothing but good luck with them.

You could have good luck with the ones you are already using too. I have had even expensive plugs go in 1 tank. Sucks! I know! But it happens.

Plus, during break-in, you are more likely to smoke a plug quickly.
 
As far as temps go:

Hot for cold weather
Med for avg. ambient weather
Cold for really hot weather and High RPM applications
