I'm new and wasn't sure where to ask so don't yell at me. I was wondering what upgrades are recommended for the T Maxx? I just got my first one used and was wondering what I should upgrade first? Thanks to all, :shrug:
 
I would suggest some aluminum bulkheads the stock plastic ones snap very easy. And defiently get a failsafe. It will keep your truck from taking off from you if you ever loose your frequency. A runnaway is no fun trust me the first time I ran my T-Maxx I had it happen it ended when it hit a pole and top speed and exploded in to pieces :doh:
 
It really depends on the budget... I would definitly get a failsafe... I would also agree with Jesse and get aluminum bulkheads (or bulkless from fastlane machine). Also, another nice upgrade is a Hitec 645mg steering servo with the Proline steering kit. It makes steering much smoother, and has a built in servo saver. The higher torque servo makes a huge difference as well... Check out the RCS cybermaxx thread i made...
 
Also Rpm A-arms they will take a beating extremely tuff and to top it off they are fairly cheap and come with a lifetime warrant you can't beat that!!

bulks break easy, so does the motor mount. you need arms, high torque servos, a battery pack, that should get you started
 
Beason, how dare you post a pic of that horrid thing in the MAXX forum!!! You should be :wban: Dont ever do that again!!!
 
The one and only upgrade needed for the T-Maxx is a Revo.
Cut your losses while your ahead. Once you start to upgrade the T your going to be in it for more then the cost of a brand new Revo.
 
LOL @ Eddy, yeah thats the truth the T-Maxx can become a huge money pit.If you really want to put money into a T-Maxx I would try to use ebay as much as possible. Building one buying parts from the hobby store will cost a small fortune! If you have the money I would get a Revo or a Savage they are know to be alot stronger built than the T-Maxx but the T-Maxx is still a fun truck to have.
 
Is the Revo a better truck than the T-Maxx? Yes

Is the T-Maxx the horrible POS that a lot of people will say it is? NO!!

For most R/Cers the T-Maxx was their first R/C.......
1. They had no clue what they were doing....hence cash to fix
2. Like you they were eager to spend money on their new toy....hence cash (A lot of it wasted on goofy unecessary stuff....primarily the addition of big blocks which in the beginning were a very expensive upgrade to the Maxx)

OK I'm done with my little rant.

Upgrades:

The TRX 2.5 is a fickle engine to tune....My suggestion for a first upgrade would be an aftermarket cooling head.

An exception to this being the first upgrade is if you are gonna race this thing....then first and foremost you will need to replace the stock wheels/tires or grind them down to have a tread profile similar to the TRC "grass tire"

A quality 6V NiMH batt pack, failsafe and a stronger steering servo would be my first upgrades.

A cooling head from Nova would also be a good idea.

After that, just replace parts as they break and as your budget allows. If you have the budget, the upgrade possiblities are endless.

It was a great truck for its time and I also credit it for getting me back into the hobby. Have fun with it.
 
First thing that went out on all 3 (OUCH) of the Ts I had was the shock caps. Don't bother replacing the caps just go for new shocks. If you do a search, you will find enough info on shocks alone to keep you busy reading for hours.

My advice like others is to run it and replace things as needed. This will keep you from spending cash on unneeded items.
 
IMO, these are the necessities to make it last awhile before needing repairs:
"NEED List"
ACNCM Bulkheads Front $33 Rear $33
RPM arms $40
RCS Skid plates Front $18 Rear $18
New Era 3-point roll bar $40

These are my suggestions just to improve things for better reliability, improve handling and less maintenence/broken parts:
pro-line steering kit $40
hitec 645MG servo for steering $40
FOC (removes reverse) $10
Center skid, helps eliminate chassis flex and protects trans/brakes $11
Better cooling head if you have the 2.5 and want to keep it $40
Better engine mount $23


Stay away from big blocks. If need be, go with a decent 18 (os cv-r(x) is pretty solid). Also, if it says integy, don't buy it. It may be cheap, but it's also junk.

Unfortunatly, the t-maxx is a truck with a lot of weak spots for a serious basher. It's quick, handles well, but breaks easily. The bulkhead/hingepin design sucks. The skid plates snap upon impact and the bulks shatter upon impact. The shocks and shock towers hold up pretty well though as do the turnbuckles. Although, I broke a lot of the turnbuckle plastic ends, but pro-line used to make a heavy duty end that was much better. I can't find a link for those though.

I had a maxx for a couple years. I had bought all of the above parts and then some. It was a good truck with the "need to have" list with a small block in it. But when I converted to a 21 BB, the driveline went to crap on me and I was constantly rebuilding diffs, cvds, trans, clutch, spurs...

Stick with a small block and a few key upgrades and you'll have fun. If you bash heavily (lots of jumps and wrecks), get the "need" list and you'll be a lot less frustrated down the line.

If in the end you want more power and a lot of it, do not be tempted to throw a bunch of money at the maxx to get a 21 into it. Save up and buy a truck that starts out of the box with a big block. There are a lot of them around now and it's a much cheaper and better way to go.

XTM Mammoth isn't the best, but they just released a new version that appears to be much better than their first version, so it makes it onto my list of decent trucks to look at.

Yeah, but your only at $182 on the "need" list.

I aggree Ed, if starting out with nothing, start with a revo or a big block truck. But, if you have a maxx and want to keep it, a few hundred is what it takes (IMO) to keep it running for a decent amount of bashing time.

BTW, it may only "need" shock ends, but it's still running the 2.5, crappy servo's and radio. That's another $400-$600 depending on what you buy.

If/When I ever get a revo, it will be a roller off of ebay so I can install what I want without paying for the junk from traxxas that comes stock.
