t-maxx shocks

hey, i have a t-maxx that i just got used, and i just changed the shock oil.(btw a pain in the ____) and i plan to be doing some big jumping, i changed the shock oil to 75 weight and i am getting some different springs. what kind springs do ya'll think i should get? when i drop it from 1-3 ft it works fine but it doesn't rise back up very much. and when i drop it from 3-5, it bottoms out.:\ traxxas sells a progressinve spring set. also what adjustments can i do with out to much removing or buying any thing?

Move the suspension top mounts to the lowest, furthest out hole. (is furthest a word?) - The lowest most 'outboard' hole.
Move the suspension bottom mounts to the closest in hole.

yeah i changed that before i did the drop test and nobody seems to have it!
i am going to my lhs tomorrow to find some parts that i need to run then after that I'm going to upgrade. it is really annoying to find nothing for hours of reaserching hunched over he computer. now my back hurts:\

All I can tell you is good luck with that 75 wt oil. Unless you have 4 hole shock pistons your shocks (if they're stock shocks...I assume) are all going to bend or break. If they are 4 hole pistons they'll probably still bend. I only used 50 wt on my stock maxx shocks and they worked good but still had issues. I would definitely put them as far out as possible, that will give your suspension a little less leverage over the shocks. The truth is if you want to jump there's really no way to avoid bottoming out. I do think progressive springs are a good idea but don't go any stiffer overall. You don't want it riding as high as possible or it'll handle like poo.:

well i think it was 75 weight oil cause it said on the bottle 750. but my mom got it for me while she was out running errands so i dont know what the guy at my lhs said. what weight oil do you think will be good? are the big bore shocks 4 hole? cause I'm new to t-maxx and i know nothin about them specifically. i dont think poo will do for me, ill do new, cause that'll do

Oh yeah, dropping the truck isn't a good way to test your setup either. When you hit a jump it'll be moving, it's a whole different situation there. When you drop it and it doesn't rise up much, try rolling it a little without pushing down or picking up on it, it should rise up slightly. Same goes for when you gently set it down on the ground, roll it a little, it should settle a bit.

Good one...LOL. I really don't know what the big bores come with for pistons, or stock shocks for that matter. I think stock is two hole. I just know that 45-50 is the best for stock shocks. You have to compromise. Too thick of an oil will prevent your suspension from rebounding good, Plus you'll ruin your shocks. To light and you can't jump high. I'm getting some big bores this spring I can't wait.

I'm going to my lhs today to pick up some lower weight shock oil, and a step up tension shocks. also do you know if the motor on the ez start 2 is the same as the older ez start? I'm picking one up today and i dont want to buy the whole set up. like on the rear body post where u connect the ez start to the truck. are they compatable?

I'd suggest 45 wt. for your shocks. That's a good all around weight IMO.

Are you running plastic shocks or the alloy traxxas big bores?

If your running plastic, I'd advise to stay at 50 or less on the weight or you will start blowing shocks apart.

Well built, not too expensive and very smooth. The springs are too soft in general though. You can run 60 weight in those with little worry of damage to the shock.

For springs, you may want to give RC Ravens dual rate springs a try.

If not, there's always the tried and true trinity black or blue (if you can find them) springs. I ran the black ones many years ago, but they aren't easy to come across anymore.

I run the RC ravens on my aftershock (obviously not the "maxx" version) and I really like them over typical stiff springs. They are a bit softer for about 1/4 of the compression, then get stiffer for the rest. So it doesn't feel like your driving a pogo stick.

yeah i think i have the big bore shocks already. i just got back from the hobby shop and got a brand new trx power charger. when i hook up the ez start the light on the charger turns orange/yellow. and the manuel says nothin about that

Not to high jack your thread but has anyone run traxxas shocks stock or big boar using just 4 like the people running buggy shocks?

If so what spring/oil/piston combo are u using.

I like the simplicity of a 4 shock set up but also dont want to go away from traxxas parts simply because I can run to the lhs and buy any part i need for them minimizing down time.

I have some upgraded black springs and just picked up the med/hard rpm pistions and have a few different wights of oil. I'm going to start experimenting and see what works but any input would help.

Also if the I can't get the stock ones to work I'm going to pick up some traxxas big bores but since i have 2 tmaxxes it would be sweet if i only had to buy one set(running 4 on each truck with updated parts.

You can run 4 traxxas shocks, but they won't hold up like buggy shocks. The shafts are smaller. With trinity black springs and 60 weight oil, they would probably ride ok though. But they won't absorb a hit like 8 of them or 4 1/8 buggy shocks would.

That said, even with 4 shocks that can take the abuse, you don't get the plush ride you do with 8 traxxas big bores. I ran UE supermaxx shocks for a good long while and used to run with a guy that tried integy's (wrecked em the first day out) then got big bores.

Hitting the same jumps at the same speed, his seemed to land on pillows whereas mine seemed much less so. Both were big block maxx chassis (old school ), so we were fairly similar in weight and dimensions.
