Hello everyone, I just got a tmaxx 3.3 and have broken it in properly and have been having alot of fun with it but am having a few problems I was hoping you all could help with. First off I keep burning up plugs. I have not touched the lsn but have played around with the hsn. After I put a new plug in and drive for about 10 minutes it will die as soon as a make a stop and will not start again until I replace the plug, Do I have it tuned wrong or am I running it to hard?

It could be tuned wrong. If it is too lean it will burn the plugs up, if it is too rich it can foul the plug out. What does the element look like when you take it out? What temps are you running at? Have you put the plug in the igniter out of the truck? It should glow bright orange. Which plugs are you using?

I have been getting the plugs from my lhs and they are I think the real mcoy or something like that. I have went through 4 plugs so far in 3 days. One of them looked all brown and nasty but the coil was still there, and the others kinda look like that but some are missing some of the coil, and one all that was left was a small peice of wire and it was straight.

Take the plug out and get a Q-Tip. Stick the Q-Tip into the combustion chamber and swab the top of the piston. After this take it out and inspect under a magnifying glass. If you see any metal particles you may have some serious problems. Could be a bearing race coming apart or something else getting on top of the piston and hammering your glow plug.

Sounds to me like it's running too lean. I'd suggest richening it up a bit. If you don't have a temp. gun, I'd suggest getting one. You're looking for temp's. in the 230-250 range.

Does it ever idle? How does it idle? Have you played at all with the IDLE screw? When you say "come to a stop", do you mean by braking?

It Idles just fine, when I put a new plug in it it runs like a raped date for about 10-20 minutes then the plug dies, and yes I do mean stop by using the brakes. And no I have not touched any screws but the high speed needle

It's lean

I would put my money on being lean. Check your hsn. Screw in until it stops and count turns. Be careful when screwing down so that you do not damage the needle. IMO I would not run a Traxxas motor any leaner that 2.5 turns out. With a pipe I have have run at 2.25 turns out.

Also, considering how many plugs you have fried I would strongly suggest you take engine apart and clean. I am not sure if you have done this before but I would completely disassemble clean, polish and reassemble. The reason I am suggesting you clean is because whenever you fry a plug and a piece is missing it means that it was in your combustion chamber. Most likely it gets blown out on the exhaust stroke; or you can be unlucky and have it scratch your piston or sleeve. The result would be shorter engine life or ultimate self destruction.

Hope this helps.

can anybody tell me if my tmx 3.3 is broken in right because the drive shaft broke when we were on the last tank and the hobby store was closed so it sat all night and we finish the break in but it still runs kinda slow

Sounds like you too lean. Burning plug that quick. Like monkey said get a temp gun too this will help you get a good tune. And last the broken drive shaft is not good to run on id change it as soon as you can.

ya i changed it the next day but when it broke i was on the last tank to break the engine in so we just started from there is that ok

Ya i just thought you were still driving on it. If I were you id tear the mill apart and look it over care fully to be shure there isnt any debre in the chamber. And try puting you needles back to stock and go from there.

scrapkilla,

yes you can continue break-in where you left off...i think heartbreak just didnt notice you were another member with different question

yes, many people dont get to finnish break-in in one day....in the future though please start a new thread for a question. instead of piggybacking someone else's thread...less confusing that way

Nope, I was aiming at the original poster - the one time I wore my glasses and actually had my brain warmed up to operating temperature.... lol.

Actually, taking the head off might not be such a bad idea, if you've "popped" several glow plug filiments (broken them completely out of the plug housing). If they were just plain burned, I wouldn't worry too much about taking the head off. Just clean and re-oil the foam in the air filter, and it should behave better for you.

not only is it too lean you might want to try a different glowplug. try the duratrax hot glowplug i use them and they last me a very long time
