Ok guy what's the deal with this savage, this is my first savage k4.6, to say the least I'm very disappointed with it. No matter how I tune it its super slow at take off and then it kicks in and goes hits second gear and keeps going. Temps get pretty high too but i can drop them by tuning a little rich. Is this normall for a k 4.6. The gears I'm using is a 17 cb & 47 spur with 3.8 tires. If some can help with I would appreciate it very much.

Have you tried the stock gearing? might want to try lower cb with higher spur combo.

I got this used and let me tell you, who ever put this together needs to give it up, apparently they had no idea how things go together, what is the stock gearing for it, I'm starting to think that eng was not broke in the right way...

Did you try to check your slipper clutch? if you sure about your tuning and the sounds of the engine is great, so you have to check in other aspect. sometimes the spring of your clutch is too hard and he need more rpm to catch the cb. cause in my case I used 20/47 gears but the take off is good and more on top speed.

Slipper is good, clutch springs seam to grab at the right time. Idk its like the eng doesn't have any power at take off but then it flys...

17/47 is stock for 46.

do ya have idle screw set to .05-.07mm? low needle set to flush with housing?( i never really had to do much adjusting from flush an any of the three 46 i had)

i just broke a 46 in over the weekend.....they act sluggish at first with very cold temps, even with hewad wrapped 3 times. only takes a few tanks to get em broke in enough for them to run pretty decent with a bit of tune and at a decent temp, the one i ran was running in the 230 range doing endless backflips and i had about 1/3 gal through it

Rolex, I will try to lean out the low side again but when I did that the temps shoot up so high the temp gun wouldn't read it...

Bifft it,, back flips? this thing won't get out of its own way, at this point I'm realy starting to think that who ever broke in the eng realy did a number in it, would that give me all of the problems I'm having?

Leaning it too far will overheat it. Start with the stock setting of the top of the screw flush with the collar. Run it till it warms up and lean it just a hair. Drive it for a few seconds so it can adjust, then punch it. If it's still sluggish off the line lean it a hair more and do the same. You can't do it in one shot.

Thanks Rolex, its funny, I have no problem tunning my tmaxx, I can make that thing do what ever I want it to do, but this eng has me all frustrated... Both are big blocks I dont get it..

Richen up the HSN a little while you adjust the LSN.
Once that's set make a few high speed runs and tweak the HSN if it needs it.
Tune for performance. Temps are just a guide after you're done.

If you know how to tune and still can't get it to run right you probably need to seal it for air leaks.

Well, turns out the problem was that famous
1/2 tank lean issue that seams to be in almost ever nitro I've owned, also the rear end would bind up when it got hot, it finally shredded the spider gears, the rear end would get very hard to turn after running for a bit, add that to the tank issue and we have an over heat and slow take off. Thanks for the help every one.

I'm sure I will be asking more questions as I'm in the prosses of building a full FLM show savage with some get up and go.

I had the same issue with K4.6 I had. Just keep running it. It took me the bettter part of a gallon before it really got broke in and making good power.

I do have a feeling that its not broke it yet. That's what happens when you buy used...

Yeah mine did the same thing. Ran real slow and sluggish and didn't seem to wanna tune very well. Finally after about a gallon or so I just started leaning the HSP till it finally woke up and started really hauling ass. I will give you a heads up on that engine. That brass mid range needle needs to be taken out and lock tighted and put back in flush with the carb body. If you don't do this that needle will fall out. I lost 2 of them in the yard never to be seen again and they cost about 5 bucks a piece.
