Substitute Temperature Gun?

I was wondering if there was a substitute temperature gun that you could make or technique like you shouldn't be able to keep your hand on it for so and so seconds etc. At the price of the LHS's ($100?!), and at the Home Depot ($40), I wouldn't take it until it was for something else I needed. Could I just take one of those murcury needles and have it really close to the engine?

Not that bad. Left me after about a year? Lot better out there, but it served the purpose.
