My new os 18 got stuck on the last tank of break in. Now the two screws on the backplate are pretty stripped and i can't get to the connecting rod to take the piston out of the sleeve. What can i do???

Well, one idea is to take the head off the engine and try pushing the piston down. If you can't get the head off, pull the glow plug out then use something to push the piston back down. I've used an unsharpened pencil before and it worked without any damage to the piston. Just put the eraser end against the piston and, if need be, tap the other end with small hammer.

You can also try taking a pair of channel locks, grab the crankshaft and turn it.

Good luck!

Also I would get out the hair dryer and heat up the engine for about 10-15 min, it expands the metal abit and will make things easier.

good luck

That always happens during break in..... All you have to do is take a flat head screw driver and push against the flywheel the opposite way that it normally turns (i forget right now). That will unlock the piston and bring it back to BDC.

And this way you dont have a risk of damaging the internals and/or denting the piston.

O.K. I was able to take the backplate off, but the hairdrier didnt work. So i vice gripped the sleeve and torched it on the stove and it released. Luckily my friend just busted his bearings in his os block so he gave me his already broken in piston and sleeve. So all is well in the neighborhood, that is until tomorrow....

Thanks for the help!

umm... fire is WAY more than 300 degrees.. you ran a BIG risk torching it...
you may have morphed it.

the screw driver advice is golden. saved me pplenty of times. use it as a lever and hook it on a notch on the flywheel. engine has to be attached to the car though

but what if he has a pullstarter? wont turning the flywheel in the other direction mess up the starter by pulling on the starter so hard.
