K after running my old style Maxx with the new OS 18 i started to strip out the plastic spur gears. One thing i noticed is that the clutch bell looks like it sticks out too far and doesn't mesh the greatest with the spur gear. I know some OS's have the smaller shafts sooooooo......should i change the shaft, upgrade to a steel spur gear or??
I need a new spur gear anyways so would upgrading to the steel be worth a shot and if so what brand are you guys running on yours?

I have heard that unless you upgrade to steel gears in the trans, then dont bother with a steel spur...you will just run the risk of stripping out the gears in the trans. Did you set the gear mesh properly?? Is your slipper set really tight or did you loosen it off as well?

you have the black tranny right?? In my classic the tranny bolts started being alittle loose .. not enough to notice but when it was running I would go through a spur every ten minutes or less, at first i thought maybe the new 3.3 was too much (yah right) Then I thought the mesh was off, and then I thought I wasn't getting the motor strait enough.. well after beating myself up i talked to someone and they pointed out after time the threads start to strip out slowly. well Here is what will make sure your tranny stays still on you.. you drill out the whole slightyly and tap these inserts into the tranny holes, guarantee it has worked for me!!!

I can't seem to find the 4mm ones for the grey tranny at the momment but these could work if you got the 3mm screws from the black tranny.. good luck and I would put money on this being your problem!!!

+1 on the tranny screws. I would also look there. I have had this happen to me before too, and took me a while to realize what was going on.

I run an OS 18 in my first gen Tmaxx and I run a Robinson racing 72 tooth spur gear and a Robinson racing hardened steel 22 tooth clutchbell. I also run the Robinson racing slipper as well. So far so good but I had an 18 tooth clutchbell and did not have enough speed so I went with the bigger one. The slipper from Robinson does not require the slipper pegs.

Chassis flex, loose trany/engine mount screws will strip a spur in no time flat.

Be sure both are tight along with your chassis braces/skid plates.

A steel spur will only mask the problem you are having, & in order to use the steel spur you
would need get a hardened steel clutch bell.
