I stripped my Spur gear but I wonder if something related to the 2 speed could of caused it. This is on a RTR (yeah right) 25 by the way. Here's what happened, I've been running it for a few days when I can and it never ever shifts to second. I've leaned it all I can without it getting to lean and still nothing. I've figured I waited enough and it should be shifting by now. My friends Tmaxx shifted around the second time he used it and never has a problem. Today I was on about my 3rd or 4th tank for the day and I tried to adjust the shift point. I tried a 90 degree turn for a while and nothing so I figured I'd try one more 130 degree turn and worst case it would shift too early. It still didn't shift but the adjustment screw was real tight to turn, is it suppossed to be that tight? After turning it out the second time the spur gear melted all the way around after about 3-5 minutes of running. Coincidence? Well I'm off to the store for a new spur gear. Any ideas on that adjustment tightness of the trans?

Mnimud, what I'd suggest doing is replacing the spur, but tighten the slipper clutch on the spur gear. What I typically do is tighten the slipper clutch nut all the way down, then back it off one turn.

I'd then set the shift point back to factory (I think it's two turns out from all the way in) and see if that helps. You can then start tweaking your shift point to your preference.

Give that a try, if it doesn't work, post again and I'm sure someone will have a good idea or two to try as well.

Good luck, man!

not trying to be a dink .but if it is extremely hard ot turn make sure your on the right hex head in there ,there is 2 the same size and 1 if them adjusts and the other tightens and holds the second gear clutch in place .

hey monkey i thought the adjustment for the slipper was snug it down then back it off 1/4 to 1/2 turn ,just curious cause a full turn seems like a lot to me

Nothing wrong with saying what you did Racin_38, good to put it out there but yes, I did check and make sure I was turning the right one.

I don't know exactly how much of a turn(s) I backed the spur gear nut out but the directions say a 1/2 turn and to me that seems way to tight still. It would take a head on collision at that setting for it to slip. I backed it out enough so I could slip it with my finger while pushing decently hard, kind of like the directions say.

ok but that honestly is too loose if you can move it with your fingers .with the torque of it running it will slip too much which in turn will build heat and melt out the centers of the spur

i set mine this way ,i do as you do then once it is really hard to hold onto it without it feeling like it is going ot rip the skin off your finger lol, then i snug it down another 1/4 to 1/2 turn or just tighten it down and back it off 1/4 to 1/2 and try it and adjust till i get the right feel

I agree. When I set it to slip with decent pressure it basically wants to rip my skin off, it's very tight if you go by that and even then sometimes I can't slip it b/c it hurts too much to hold. I didn't melt the middle but the teeth all around. The middle of the gear when I removed it looked fine. What I don't understand is that the directions mention nothing about the shift adjustment other then which way to turn it for later or earlier shifts. If I was building it from a kit how would I know how many turns out from all the way in was right? It says nothing unlike in my brothers RS4 3 18SS where it specifically states how many turns out. The directions are definitely lacking is certain areas. Do I use the same settings has my brothers car? I don't see how that could be right with such a different gear and engine combo.

Be sure to set the mesh right on the spur. I've messed up one spur since I bought mine. It was because of the clutch bearings.

Are you sure the engine is leaned out enough? If it's not turning enough RPM's, it will never change. Mine runs about 260 degrees.

Are you sure that the trans is not in second gear all the time? I've looked for the initial settings, but can't find them. Not even on the kit. Maybe I missed it? You can look at them on HPI's site.
There is a pretty good vid here. But the site isn't working now. Maybe try it later? http://www.savagebeast.150m.com/id20.htm

You might be right, Racin'. I start a turn off, then tighten it until I get it where I want and it's shifting. I'm just thinking with mnimud's problem, the slipper may be too loose.

It might be a better idea, mnimud, to start at 1/4 to 1/2 off on the slipper and adjust from there.

I'll dig my manual out and see if it has settings.

Here's a quick and easy trick from Fasteddy on setting the slipper clutch.

Loosen it up.
Place your truck into a wall or curb.
Increase the throttle slowly to 1/2.
Tighten the slipper a little at a time until it "just" trys to climb the wall.
Make small adjustments from there for your style.

Thanks guys for all the help. I looked at the manual and it says 1/2 turn out from locked on the slipper. I'm pretty sure I had it set right the first time as the middle looked perfect after the meltdown. I set it just about factory this time too.

Today I was bored and since it's raining here I decided to pull the engine and seal it even though I was just working on it last night installing the new spur. Hopefully I found part of or all of my problem. When I went to take the carb off the lock down screw was far from what I would call tight. After I took the screw out completely the carb came off so easy I was amazed. I think the set screw wasn't tight enough and the carb may have been vibrating loose just a hair and it was a bit finicky to tune. Well now I sealed the backplate and carb and everything is tight as it should be with all bolts getting threadlock. Maybe I really wasn't getting enough rpm for the trans but I'll find out the next nice weekend that comes around.

Anybody able to find what the actual setting for the trans is from factory, like how many turns out from full bottom? That's the only thing I have left to set back before I go test it out.

Digger, thank you for posting the link to the videos originally and Shorty thank you for fixing them. I was the one who e-mailed you about them. These are hands down the best tuning videos for the Savage I have ever seen. :thankyou: :w00t:

Did I post it wrong?
Sorry dude. :opps:

You posted it correctly, the video links were bad but all's good now.

I ran the truck for the first time today since sealing the engine, installing the new spur gear, watching the tuning videos, and somehow a ribbed pipe got installed too, now how'd the get in the mix lol. At first same thing, no shifting. It still had a slight off idle bog similar to what I saw in the video so I leaned the lsn a bit, played with the hsn more and bam, second gear!! I believe the lsn from the factory was set way too rich which then threw off everything else. My new spur gear still looks great so the mesh is right on. Of course after a little more then a half tank the receiver battery got low so the failsafe kicked in. I put it on charge and then my glow stick died as well as my 7.2V roto battery, go figure. My brother and I share so they really get alot of use and today they were a little finicky to start so we used them all up. I tried borrowing a friends glow stick but it was dead since he has the Tmaxx and usually uses the wire to start it. All in all it was still a good day, everything worked the way it was suppossed to. Thanks for all the help guys!!
