I think my son might have stripped a gear. When he puts it in reverse it just sits there. Then when he goes back to forward he needs to give it a push with his foot to get it moving. Does this sound like a gear?? I don't know what I'm looking for but I was going to pull the tranny and look inside. Does this sound like a job for a noob with heart looking for a learning experience or should I leave this one to the pros?

i never took an RC tranny apart before, i was also thinking about taking my FOC to the pros to get it done. than one day i just decided to go for it and it was really smooth job. the only hard thing i had was getting the center driveshafts back in was a pain but other than that it was a breeze. from reading your posts and all i would have full confidence in your skill to take it apart with limited problems.

Good luck Buddy!

if you need any help let me know i got the directions still from when i bought my FOC. it tells you step by step how to remove the tranny and exactly what gears are and what they do!

You can do it NitroNewb. It's all part of the learning experience. It's only intimidating if you never did it before. Do it once, do it right, be proud when it runs.
It's really not hard. The only time I would forgive someone for taking it to a Hobby shop to have work done, is when it's a week old. Beyond that, wrenching becomes a very enjoyable part of the hobby.
Good luck, and have fun doing it.

The tranny is out after a bit of a struggle. It'll come out easier the next time. I pulled it apart expecting to find vaporized plastic or bearings. Nothing. Everything looks brand new. Gears are perfect. No dust. The only thing I noticed both before I pulled it apart and after I put it back together is that the shaft doesn't spin freely when I'm holding the tranny in my hand. It will go about 2 turns either way then stop. Should this main shaft spin freely?
What else if not the tranny would cause the car not to go in reverse?
GHM

Very often, things need to be adjusted or at least tweaked a bit when the car is new. It's possible the end point on your shift servo is not going all the way back, or the idle is a little too high to allow it to shift.
With the car in forward, and fully warmed up, watch the servo as you shift it into reverse. give it an extra nudge with your finger, and see if it goes in. If it does, then you only need to adjust the shift linkage end point.
Wait till you get the info you're looking for here before you put everything together again. I can't help you with the current question unless it's a bad bearing you need to check.

After a triple check off the tranny innards I'm convinced the problem lies elsewhere. I just finished putting it back together and trying it. It goes into reverse now but with a lot of rattling and it sounds terrible when running in reverse. It also stalls every time the brake is applied, forward or reverse.

Chances are it's still not fully engaging in reverse. That rattling you hear might be the gears not meshing completely, and that will knock off some teeth.
You need to reset the idle on it by turning the trim knob on the radio to zero. You have the trim knob turned up, and when you apply brake, the throttle goes BELOW the cut off point. Adjust the idle screw with the brake applied to approximately 1-2 mm opening, looking into the carb neck, then start it and fine tune it.

Today I gave up. I was going to the lhs anyway so I brought the Revo and laid it out for the guy. He rolled it back and forth and said a gear was broke. I told him I checked the gears in the tranny and they looked great!! About 45 seconds later he had the tranny out (I couldn't believe it. Took me 45 min.). He asked if I removed all the gears and I said no...so he pulled them out and sure enough reverse was chewed up. The chips were on the bottom where I couldn't see them. I felt like an idiot. He put it all back together, took it outside warmed it, tuned it, played with it, tweaked it. Perfect. He charged me $9.00 for the gears, no labor. I picked up a receiver while I was there for the VRC thing. That was $25. So tell me again why I'm working on this thing????oh yea...the enjoyment.

haha dude you will grow into the rebuilding part. Wrenching on them usually happens more than the play time. Just a part of the hobby.

WOW, you made out BIG TIME. He did you quite a favor. Don't expect him to do that all the time, though. If he did, there would be a line out the door waiting for him.

I asked him to come live with us but he declined. My wife wasn't to crazy for the idea either.

lol now that's funny. I can see it now. "Hey hunny, I'm tired of rebuilding diffs and tuning nitro engines. I couldn't get the guy from the lhs to move in with us, so I asked the guy under the bridge if he was good at working on RC's. Would you believe he said that's his specialty?? So that's why the smelly guy is sleeping on the couch."
