Stripped Diffs

Man this sux!! Both my front and rear diffs are toast!! Stripped them both while out doing some relativly gentle bashing (hill climbing) does anyone know if there are metal diff housings available for the Savage 25?? I see that the pins that hold the spider gears actually moved in the slots and I had to use pliers to get them out.........let me tell ya this really f:censored:ing p:censored:es me off since I just dropped $200 of parts in to my truck, I changed out my Kongs last night for the stock tires, I figured this would probably be best until I can upgrade my upper and lower arms and get the upgraded turn buckles since I also noticed it looks like a bit more strain on the TB's with the added weight of those big tires.........any way my big question is concerning the diff housings as mentioned above.........anyone know if there are metal or aluminum housing available?? This plastic crap is a joke!

for those Kongs you really shoulda do the 4 spider diff converstion... and yesh they do make aluminum casing for them.. but really don't need it if you do the 4 spider which is better..

I plan to do the 4 spider mod, since I have to replace all the gears anyway, but I would also like to do away with as much plastic parts as I can, you say if I do the 4 spider mod that I shouldn't need the aluminum case though?

No you shouldn't need an alloy case.My diffs did the same thing before I did the diff mod.The pins worked their way into the diff housing and ruined the case after about 15 tanks with my 8 port.I've got almost 3 gallons on the diff mod and I'll be taking it apart for a good cleaning today and I'll let you know how the diffs look but I don't think they will be any problems.

Thanks Rex, I'll be looking forward to your report on that, if I can just get a new set of plastic cases and save some money I'm all for it, money is kinda tight right now anyway till spring gets here, I think I'm also going to go back to either my 14t or 15t CB, currently I am useing a 13t and think it may have had some help in the thrashing of the diffs.........

I was thinking the same as you RR. I use GPM diff case and the spider mod awhile back and last I looked they where just fine. But as usual I might have gone over board with the aluminum diffs.

Yea, but it really sux that the plastic cases tend to strip so easy when you put the screws back in, I'm not one that likes to leave things loose, and seems when you try to tighten the screws in the plastic the least bit it just keeps turning and won't get tight.....I just like to know that my stuff isn't going to come loose and fly apart while I'm out trying to do some bashing, thats why I was interested in the alloy diff cases......really to me the weight isn't an issue, not like I'm gonna be racing, I just want to be sure my truck is going to hold up to some rugged terrain.....almost seems like I got a really expensive Tyco r/c with all the probs with the cheap ass plastic parts that are failing........

Road Rage dude I feel your pain about dumping money into the savage. I got the stock 21 USED and man I have had nothing but problems with it. I am going to be doing the 4 spider mod this weekend, just picked up a new cooling head, S-25 tank with the rear pickup and some other fun stuff. Also picked up some bearings for the steering in hopes of improving steering response. Good luck man.

I did the 4 spider gear mod after 4 gallons on my .21 and everything looked new. Now I have a picco.26 in and have a gallon on that and no trouble. So I have a total of five gallons on the diffs with no problems at all . My two cents.

Ok I took the diffs apart yesterday and everything looks brand new still!!!The fluid was even still clean LOL.After about 3 gallons and a Hyper21 8 port they still look as good as the day I put them in so I think it's safe to say the diff mod works and is worth it!

Definately do the spider mod if you're running an engine more powerful than the stock 21BB. And while you've got them apart, put some diff lock oil in there instead of grease. I'm running the mod, with 10K in the rear, 5K wt in the front. If you're rock climbing, it'll make a world of difference to have a limited slip diff instead of the free wheelin stock setup. Fill the diff up to the middle of the diff pins only, any more and it'll make the diffs leak.

Thanks for the help guys, Rex that was good to hear about the condition of your gears.......I think I'll not get the alloy cases and just get a new set of plastic, thanks again guys, hope to be up and running again soon, gonna cost some more money though, think my 25 is about due for new piston and sleave, gonna have the lhs do a compression test on it for me first.

About the screws, I replaced the screws with m3X16mm machine screws (flathead of course). Could have used m3X18mm, but the hardware store did not carry the m3X18mm so I got the m3X16mm and it holds stronger than before and it cost me .22 cents a screw and I took their last 10 screws. So, by doing this the plastic cases will not strip.
