I'm posting this for my bro-in-law........I already know how to drive ;)

Besides needing driving lessons I need help. I have had two mild accidents with my Tmaxx. Hitting curbs kinda head-on. Not really that hard, but my problem is that I have broken my fuel tank and motor mount both in the same spot two crashes in a row.

There is no other visible damage anywhere on the truck. the trucks stays running and all rubber is right side down. I have inspected the truck for damage each time (usually after I see fuel pouring out of the tank) and there is nothing..maybe a small scratch here and there. I figure that for the fuel tank and/or motor mount to break in a head-on crash (even if it were at high speed), a heckuva lot of other parts need to break before the fuel tank and motor mount go. Is it possible something is too tight? The bumpers move under force, is it possible to have them TOO loose? Anything else aside from the few things that I can think of?

Thanks!!!
-Mike

well that is kinda strange that the gas tank had broken when u had hitten a curb straight on, but it might depending on how much force it was. same with the motor mount could have done the same thing if going fast enough come a complete stop and it is still trying to go forward and just breaks the mount. the bumper should be tight, it doesn't really matter what truck or bumper u have almost all of them will move under enough force!

The stock Traxxas engine mounts break rather easily. Do yourself a favor and buy a machined alum mount instead of the stock one. The fuel tank just about any of your lhs' out there will stock, buy two while you're at it since they are so cheap and easy to break.

As far as your other request, how much are you willing to spend to have a parts kit?

the stock mounts are rather cheap and weak. i had broken many of them when i had them by landing on top of them and hitting things. (bashing sure does mess ur truck up!!

Why didn't you say that the first time?

1st Post mentions nothing about the engine mount being weak. Second post, after my post about the strength of the mount mentions how weak they are. Coincidence?

o!! sorry about that. i had just remembered that i had broken them. it has been so long ago!

ok Iam the non-driver was having trouble posting before had to change name. the impact was not all that hard it was a sloped curb the truck hit and kept goin..of course we did notice the fuel pouring out. the same spot on the mount and gas tank broke in both collisions. Just not sure if anyone else has had this problem. I would think that I would break something else w/a hit that hard. anyone have any ideas?:wtf: only me.

yea I am finding out they break waaaaaaay to easy. My bro in law was really bashin his truck no prob with his...my last run a snap a mount and tank..ugh! think a tank protector might work? or putting something under it to absorb some impact would work? :stupid: Oh yea the tank is less than a week old and a traxxas replacement tank. and what kinda mount do you think I should buy?

The stock tank on the T-Maxx has weak posts and seams. These two areas are usually the first to go in any collision, and I'd be willing to bet that it was one of the tank posts pushed through the bottom of the tank or cracked at the bottom of the tank that you witnessed on your T-Maxx.

The cause for this is what in human terms would be known as blunt force trauma. The chassis braces, bulkheads, bumper supports and chassis plate make up the spine of your truck. If everything is put together properly, any head on collision gets distributed down the "spine", and anything connected to it can get some of that pain. In this case, the cheap engine mounts and the posts for the fuel tank.

The solution to the engine mounts has already been thrown out to you. Buy some upgraded mounts. The solution to the fuel tank (aside from a new tank and keeping a spare handy) is to provide some sort of cushion or bushing between the tank post and the chassis plate. I have a little tip that might help in that area...

Here's my solution to the problem.

What you will need:
A four inch length of fuel tubing.
Four mounting screws that are 1/8 longer than the stock mounting screws.

The procedure:
1. Remove fuel from tank
2. Remove tank from chassis
3. Cut four 1/2-3/4 inch lengths of fuel tubing from your 4 inch piece
4. Force as much of the tubing onto the individual tank posts, leaving about 1/4 inch beyond the end of the post
5. Position the tank over the holes on the chassis.
6. Using the longer mounting screws, feed the screw through the chassis, into the fuel tubing and then the mounting posts.
7. Tighten the mounting screws until you compress the excess fuel tubing about 1/8"
8. Re-attach the fuel lines, fill 'er up and go.

This will give you some motion on the tank, but the fuel tubing will act as a shock absorber. I did this mod after I cracked my fuel tank (about eight months ago), and I have not cracked the replacement (despite several bash sessions with Pirata, The Master of Disaster.)

These directions should get the job done. If you are having trouble visualizing the mod, let me know, and I will snap a photo of my tank and post it for you.

Good luck and happy Maxxing!

Good luck with the new toy.

i have only been through 1 gas tank since i have had my truck. and i have had it for over 3 years.

Since you're pointing to my post, am I being called stupid again? It's alright if you are. I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

Play harder and you'll have a quiver of broken tanks like mine...

Glug! Glug!

I've heard of a few MAXX owners breaking fuel tanks.
Remember that the tank is only held in by 4 screws and the moulded stand-offs on the tank are thin too.

As for the engine mount, the "master of disaster" summed that up, but I'd like to add that the motor also has an EZ-Start system with a 300 size electric motor attached to it and the alloy motor head.
All this stuff sits quite high up, so the leverage alone would have no hassle snapping the motor mountings, which are cheap casts.

Get a machined solid aluminum motor mount, these are much better than standard mounts.

Another thing to consider is an aluminum fuel tank, they do cost, but they don't break.
At under ten bucks, the standard plastic Traxxas tank is an item well worth keeping spare in the pitbox.

lol, well i finally have gotten a truck that will stand up to the heat of the jumps and rolling and all of that good stuff.

Skymaxx,

thanks that sounds like a good idea. once I get my new tank I will try it, are you an EMT or medic sounds like it w/the blunt force trauma theory hey at least i understood what you meant about the spine it would make sense though the drivers side rear mount broke, and then the passenger side mounts for the fuel tank broke (all facing the "spine") thanks for the help.

Michael

only one tank?...I am on # 3...for the 3 week of owning the truck..where can I buy driving lessons plz :loser:

well i dont know, i guess u would have to go to the DMV. lol i just dont go bashing as often as i would like too.

el pirata

nope sorry wasn't pointing to you w/the I'm w/stupid thing I meant as me..shoulda clicked on the loser one...lol am I catching up to you w/wasted tanks?

Nope. Not an EMT, just a Naval Aviator. I figured I'd put it in terms that might make sense. That analogy always seems to work.

Anyway, the mod is cheap and effective. I have only broken two tanks in almost a year and a half (including several bashes with Pirata). The first was pre-mod, the second was one of my more grotesque landings on top of the tank. Bushings would have had to have been huge to save the tank.

Give it a go, and see if you save some money on the tanks...you will need it for other things...like engine mounts.
