Does anyone know of a way to enhance the look of stock brushed Maxx rims?? I want to try to find a way to give them a color "anodized" look, but something that will be durable, and not peel off. I figured spray paint as an option, but it would probably come off the first time I spray denatured alcohol on them. It would be kinda cool to find a way, seeing most people don't want to drop $100 for new rims.

I was pretty impressed with a product called DuraClear by DecoArt. You can use it as a clear coat. It comes in Gloss or Satin if you're lookin for a little less shine. It's a polyurethane varnish, it's totally weatherproof and non-yellowing. I sprayed it through an airbrush as is.

I was lookin for a way to make some flat black rims. I got some dyable rims and dyed them black then sprayed this stuff over it (the Satin type).. not quite flat, but definately not as glossy. I havn't used the rims that I did yet but It looks like it'll hold up pretty well for the most part.

I'm not super familiar with denatured alchol so I'm not sure what all types of things it'll eat up. I assume quite a wide range and probably this stuff also. But why would you be spraying it on your wheels. I would think it wouldn't be very good for the tires though.

Well, I just got off RPM's website after I posted this. I found that thier "chrome", and white products, along with "brushed" parts, can all be colored. They suggest using Rit clothing dye, which has lots of colors. Check it out here http://www.rpmrcproducts.com/faq/dye.htm. I'm gonna give it a try on mine, and I'll let ya know how it turns out.

If the rims are nylon and basic chrome like what RPM sells then you can use Rit dye and it will give them a nice anodized look that will stay.but if they are dyeable they will be a flat color. but you can look at a paint shop their are paints that will stay on plastic and wont chip or come off in denauterd alc.

not really. If the surface of the dyeable material is smooth and glossy then the outcome will be a dyed smooth and glossy surface. I don't mean to be critical Tarant but I've seen it

Well, I just spray painted mine! Gave it a primer paint first, so the colored paint would stick, and wah lah: painted rims!! Of course I took my time, gave it about 10 coats, and let it dry for a few days!!

Lessen I dident mean flat it was a bad choice of words I just ment they wouldent look anodized

Well, I did my stock rims yesterday, and they turned out pretty cool. First, getting the tires off the rims was a pain :hammer: , but it's part of having a hobby. I tried the boiling method on one, and it didn't work too well for me. So, I pryed the tires off the rims, which left behind alot of rubber and ca glue in the rim grooves. So, I bought some acetone from Home Depot, and soaked them for an hour, and everything came off the rim, nice and clean. I then boiled the rims in RIT Scarlet red, but wasn't happy with the results due to the rims being pretty scratched up. I then scuffed the rim with a light steel wool pad, to get off all the brushed aluminum finish, and reboiled them. I slapped some new Maxx tires I got off ebay, and viola, I now have "new" rims for under $5.00. I'll eventually upgrade to some Proline 40's, but this is definately a cheap, cool way to customize the look to stock rims. This hobby is definately getting more addicting, and expensive than my custom Harley I built last year!! But, it keeps my mind occupied, and me outta trouble!! Sorry about the pix, they're off my webcam. Thanks for all yer help.
