If you're still getting a lot of smoke, and your 8 tanks into the break in, by all means lean it out. It sounds like your low end is fine, but as soon as your rpms come up, it's pigging out.
During and after break in, you'll need to do a little treaking on both the carb and the trans to get it where you like it.
Keep a close eye on the temps, and make sure you always see a smoke trail.
