Hey guys,

Got a chance to get some bashing in this weekend once the rain stopped and I was having a hard time getting the Maxx to run right. First off it didn't want to start or stay started. I had to feather the throttle to get it to run and then once it got warm it would start and stay started pretty well. My temps were in the low 200's although with that big ACNCM head I am not sure how acurate my readings were. Where is the best place to get a temp reading on that head? Anyway, when I would hit the throttle it was very slow to repsond, didn't jump off the line at all. Wouldn't even pull the front wheels off the ground. Second, sometimes when it would reach full throttle it would sound dead, almost as if it were going to die out, like it would get ready to shift into 2nd and it would hesitate and sound very muffled. It sounded great until just about 2nd gear, and then sound like it was going to die, the truck lost momentum and as soon as I let off the throttle and hit it again all was well. It shifted into second sometimes but not all the time. Very sparatic. Is my mill dead or is there some adjustment off? I am still not real familiar with how a mill sounds when it is running bad or good for that matter, but I know for a fact the sounds I was getting yesterday were definitely bad. Any insight you guys could provide will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Tom

Part of what you are telling us sounds like it is too lean on the LSN, and part sounds like you are too rich on the HSN, and another part sounds like you are too lean on the HSN. I would try to richen up the HSN a 1/8th turn and see if it gets better. Your temps sound fine considering that big head on the mill. If it gets worse, lean the HSN 1/4 turn. If it continues to get better, then move it another 1/8th lean. If not getting better, try to richen the LSN 1/16th.

I take my temps in three places. In Da' Hole, top of the head and last one right by the header where it connects to the block.

Sorry for the confusion Revo, I just don't know how to describe it any better than that. When your car does not accellerate off the line what is generally the cause? I turned the HSN 4 turns from out and I have probably turned it 3/4 of a turn to the lean side and that is it. I have not touched the LSN at all. Basically the truck has good smoke but very sluggish conditions. I was under the impression that, that little mill would pull the front wheels off the ground. I don't know. I don't know if this helps at all but if you have any specific questions you need answered just give me a shout and I will be happy to answer. Thanks again guys.

You weren't being confusing, you were reporting what you observed.

By the sound of your second post, I think your HSN is too rich. I would lean the HSN another 1/8th, make a few passes after it warms up and if it seems to be better but not perfect, do it again. Stop leaning it if you lose smoke. Once you hit the sweet spot on the HSN you will know. It will respond in all throttle ranges and shift easily into second. And it won't stall like when you are making a slow turn.

I think Revo hit it......godale, don't concentrate on how many turns in or out you are...I only pay attention to that when I look for factory settings.....once you get the temps up then adjust your HSN first.....once you are running in th eright temp "range" 220-250 then start looking for performance gain....if you're running on a short track w/ no real long stretches and you start over heating then you know your LSN is lean....if you are running balls to the wall long runs and overheating then its your HSN to lean.....that's my general way of tuning.....having a good temp guage is good as a check........also I make 1 adjustment at a time and run it a few passes to see how it changed...never just start turning screws to a specific turn number and think that is where it will stay.......saturday I had to adjust every 30 mins or so cause the weather was changing that drastically....the wind would kick up and the humidity & temps would drop....had to retune....then the winds stopped and temps & humidity rose again.....unless where you are the weather is dead stable you will always have some tuning to do.....I am just now coming to accept that......

Ain't that the truth!
