OK, this is my first post on a forum ever...

I recently bought a T-Maxx 2.5, and the steering sucks. I guess i have two questions:

1) what is the best Metal Gear servo out there?

2) Do I need to also upgrade my battery pack?

any help would be appreciated.:confused:
 
Although I dont have a Tmaxx,, I use hitec 645mg servos for my gs storm,plenty of tourque and very responsive!

Upgrading your battery pack is always a good idea regardless of what servos you end up using!
 
I have that same servo, the Hitec 645mg servo in both of my Ts, as well as a 5 cell receiver pack in them. It is a great servo, especially for the price. You don't have to upgrade the battery pack right away, it will work fine with the stock battery holder and AAs.

If you are going to swap out the steering servo. Check out the ProLine steering kit. It has a built in servo saver.

If you don't have the $$$. You should at least ditch the stock servo saver with one from Kimbrough.
 
I saw a guy at the local lhs this week working on a customer's tricked out Maxx. (This thing was pretty with all the bells and whistles, I know he doesn't drive it like we do.)

Counter guy was adjusting the steering. This steering moved like the wheels were off the ground, but they weren't. I mean from stop to stop quickly with no problem. I couldn't see what servo it was as it was protected by a Dynamite servo guard. I was told it was a digital servo but that's about it.

Hell, I've got a Hitec 645MG and it doesn't move the steering with anything near the authority that this digital servo had.

I think I want another steering servo.

And yes, get the ProLine steering kit as your old servo had a built-in saver. A new servo will just have horns.

I have been looking for the Proline kit on-line. Google can't seem to find anyone that sells them.

Any suggestions?

Nevermind (as i kick the dirt with my head hung low...). I just found Proline's website.

I would recommend the HiTec servo that everyone has been talking about here...or suggest that you step up to a Digital high torque servo by HiTec. I use the HS-5645MG for steering duty in my T-Maxx, Savage and Mugen MBX-5. These servos rock, and for $60 I think the price is right.
 
Hey Sky, I just got a Savage SS, so I figured I would try the Hitec 5645 MG for the steering in this truck, I have the 645s in my Ts, and have been very happy with them. I got mine from Servo City, very nice people to deal with, great prices, no shipping costs within the US, what more could you ask for.

mmuehlendorf, You can always find the pro line kit on ebay too...

You won't be disappointed. 160 zo-in of torque. Responsive and powerful...just what an MT needs for steering.
 
OK, need more help...

I now have the ProLine steering kit and a Hitec 645MG. Both are installed, and I have a big problem. When you turn the wheels to the left and release, they come back to center. However, when I turn to the right, they stay to the right. I have to turn left before they recenter. I am doing this on a stand or holding it in my hand, so there is no resistance. WTF!! I have tried tightening the servo saver spring on the ProLine steering, but it doesn't help. Also FYI, when the wheels are stuck to the right, there is almost enough play in the linkage to turn them back to center without moving the servo. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?!?! :help:

Another thought...does the Maxx actually have to be MOVING to get the steering to work right??? Just a thought... :doh:
 
No, the Maxx doesn't have to be moving for steering to work.

Odds are you have overtightened something. The linkages and posts need to be just tight enough to hold them in place. Any tighter and you end up with binding. I would check to make certain you didn't overtighten everything in the steering department.

I'll have to defer the ProLine answers to those that have that kit. Try FastEddy. I know he has it on his CyberMaxx.

That's just the line Traxxas feeds you in their manual because their stock steering servo is crap, just like any other RTR for that matter.
 
OK, I figured it out. The pivot ball caps were about 1/16 of a turn too tight. The funny thing is, I never touched them. I guess that last track run really messed with more than I thought.
