Got my tune straight today, and promplty cleaned off the stock spur gear. (Gotta love this hobby!) Any pros or cons going steel?

if you go to a steel spur gear you will have more of a chance of breakin something in the tranny isntead of smoothing the teeth off the spur

Also, with the steel spur you should replace the stock clutch bell with one that's made of hardened steel

Thanks, I knew that the hardened stell bell was needed. If steel increases the chance of have issues else where, I'll stick with plastic. Stock Traxxas, or are there better choices?

BTW, reason for cleaning the teeth was due to broken motor mount, caused most likely from loose bolts from lack of attention.

Ok cool, thanks for letting us know.

The stock spur gears are fine.
If your tearing them up you need to keep an eye on your gear mesh.
Sand and small pebbles will also destroy them.

The steel spur gear is not a good idea. I had one and i could not get it to cat walk no matter how much i tighten the slipper clutch. I have the .26 picco max it should cat walk with no promblem so I'm thinking the extra weight is causing it not to grab right i have a three piece clutch to so i think its the weight of the gear or my tenion washers are shot got a stock spur gear coming now.

Could be your tune..

Dissimilar materials is always better less friction. Similar materials causes heat that robs you of power the gears can actually grow changing clearance.Steel on steel is fine in a gearbox with oil but not in open air at high speed.;)
