So somehow or another the spur gear on my 3.3 ground off all the teeth today. I haven't disassembled it yet, but from the look of the gear, the motor must have worked loose and changed the mesh of the bell gear and spur gear. Probably the result of a head on colision with a pine tree this weekend...lol. I'm thinking about upgrading to a steel gear, the truck already has a steel bell gear. I was wondering if anyone is having problems with a steel gear setup on their truck? My main concern is adding stress somewhere else in the drive train by upgrading the gear. Looking at the drivetrain, I don't see anything that may become a weak point, but it never hurts to ask. Also should I set the mesh of the steel gear with a piece of paper between the two, or run a little more mesh with a steel gear? Thanks for the help.

As far as mesh you set them them the same way, I would highly recommend the Robinson Racing gears. I having been bashing a set in my Revo now for a year and a half with no real signs of wear. No matter the setup if you are going to cause stress to your driveline it will be because your slipper is set too tight make sure that is adjusted as well. have fun....

I have a brand new set of the Robinson Racing steel combo 40T/16T. It's in the for sale section.

You could also get a handful of stock spurs for cheap. I've had them last for several gallons with the right mesh. They run quiet and smooth. And if you crash again that steel one could get ground up a little too along with your clutch bell. For a 3.3 it's just not necessary.

Against my better judgement, I installed a 38 tooth Integy steel spur on my truck. I had the LHS order one, I didn't know it was an Integy until it came in. You guys weren't lying, Integy stuff is junk. There wasn't enough clearance between the gear and the air filter housing, and it rubbed a hole in the filter housing. Not only that, but the screws for the gear rubbed against the bell gear until they backed out and the gear came off and knocked the clip off the bell gear and it came off the clutch. I learned my lesson about Integy crap. So for now I've replaced everything that got lost, and several different teeth count plastic gears.

You would want a 36 tooth with a 14-16 tooth bell. That will spare your air filter neck. Also if your bell is rubbing on the spur gear screws then you either put it on backwords or have a bent chassis. Before I knew about Integy I bought their 18/36 steel gears and they've been fine. I'm not saying that Integy is a good company, but I am saying that they do have a couple good items. I know they can't compare with robinson racing.

The gear was installed correctly, it will only go one way. The gear even came with button head screws to increase clearance over the socket head screws that came on it. It's just a crappy design. I have the stock bell (14 tooth, maybe??) and a Traxxas 40 tooth on the truck now with no fitment issues.

It was actually the screws, Integy knows it's a clearance issue because they provide button head screws in the kit to account for the thickness difference of their gear versus the Traxxas piece
