So I went out to start break in on my new Savage and the piston keeps getting stuck at top. Its the K4.6. I tried heating with a hair dryer and still getting stuck. Any advice?:\
 
Loosen the glow plug just slightly. just enough to take the torque out of it and try again. once it gets warmed up tighten it back down.
 
Since I've posted I've pulled the motor, pulled the head off and tried to turn it over. It gets stuck at top and will push the sleeve out. I put the head back on and manually turned it over with a wrench and when it gets to the top it makes a grinding sound. I think I got a bad motor. I've seen tight pistons and sleeves but not this tight.
 
If you take the head off the engine and turn it over the piston will always push the sleeve out except on a severely worn enginek Is this engine new or has it been pinched?
 
My bad, my eyes must have completely skipped your first statement. I would try yo start it with the plug slightly loose. This helped me break in my new RB engine this summer as well.
 
Get it hotter. Go buy a good heat gun and get it up to 220F. A good battery in your roto will help too. Those 1500 and 1800 packs barely do the job on big block engines.
i know the mah has nothing to do with the power it puts out but the better quality high mah packs put out more current.
 
I was using a pull start and broke it. My rotostart should be here Monday. I was at Lowes today and allmost bought a heat gun but I thought a hair dryer would do the trick. Are these motors typically this tight at tdc? I really dont want to send it off if they're just going to send it back but if theres something mechanically wrong that I can't see than I don't want to spend too much more time trying to fix it.
 
A heat gun is a good investment if you stay in the hobby. You can find them for under 30 bucks if you look around.
Yes, almost all good engines are really tight at first. The cold weather does not help either. if it is 70F outside, my broken-in engines start easy. Below 60F and they can be a pain!
 
I'll get a heat gun today and if I can rig up a pullstart, I'll give her another shot tommorrow. This is my first bb so that could have something to do with it. Thanx
 
Did you try to start it with the GP a little loose? I'm not trying to diss the heat gun idea method, that does help tremendously sometimes, but why spend $30 if you don't need to?
 
Allright guys I'm in love. I got a heat gun and a rotostart and I got her broke in. I had to heat the mill for the first three tanks. This thing is awesome. I played with my nephew and he drove my revo. He was in the garage and saw the controller to his revo, so I told him they were just spares. Hes gonna be the happiest kid on Christmas. Hell, he might get 2 revos cause I'm Savage all the way now. Anyways, thanx for all the help. I'm glad I asked some questions and did'nt send the mill back.

Lessen I did try to take the plug completely out and warm with a hair dryer yesterday. I guess I just got a really tight mill. Thanx
 
Using a heat gun during breakin results in a better breakin and a longer lasting, better performing engine.
Glad it worked out for you! Nothing like a Savage for bashing!
 
Thats exactly what the guy at the lhs said about the heat gun. He said to try and keep the temps up during break in for a better fit between the piston and sleeve. Made sense to me. Oh yeah, she flies nice! Think were going to have one more warm day Sunday so I'll get to play a little more before it gets cold. Need another project for January.lol
 
wondering if i should pick up a heat gun and break in this engine before it stays dormate for the off season.... but is useing a heatgun then going right out to 40degree weather going to hurt anything?
 
Nah, as long as it is tuned properly it will be fine.
