My tmaxx spur gear stripped, it is a 72 tooth. can you change them? and what does it change?

I put in a METAL 70 tooth spur gear. I did this cause I stripped 3 plastic ones in 3 weeks.

Get a 70 a you go faster.

If you do go to metal, remember to get a hardend steel clutch bell, because the stock clutch bell won't handle the hardend steel spur. I learned the hard way! The stock one lasted, oh... maybe 5 tanks...

just from experience try to steer clear of a steel spur ,you need a weak link somewhere and sooner it be a spur then gears in the tranny and GT is very right ,steel spurs will tear up a stock bell really fast
i went with a RRP daul disk slipper and ditched the pegs ,alot nicer setup and there spurs are replaceable without removing the tranny .just remove the fuel tank alot easier
and you can get a steel or very sturdy plastic gears
and personally i do not need the speed i like lowend torque so i went wit this combo,
16 tooth bell and a 72tooth spur ,wow wheelie city and still moves really quick

Hey Rick, where can I look at this RRP daul disk slipper you speak of on the internet?

Robinson Racing makes the slipper disk set-up he is speaking of. Here's a link:

As for what the gear material should be, your ability to set the mesh properly is going to make a huge difference. I have run metal on plastic, steel on steel, steel on hardened steel, and a few other options and they all ran equally well for equally long periods of time. I preferred the RRP set up with steel ring. Light weight and very effective.

As for the weak link, I ran my T-Maxx with steel gears and upgraded my drive shafts from diffs to wheels, but stuck the the stock slider axles between tranny and diffs. The slider axles were my weak link and were even easier to change out.

I suggest that there are a number of ways to skin this cat, but recommend the steel gear as a great upgrade.

not being an ass but if you dont get the mesh perfect with a metal spur your going to tear up the bell reguardless,a hardened just takes a little longer to shred ,the biggest thing i like about traxxas spurs is that thye are wide unlike my axis buggy or anything duratrax they are thin and the tear up a bell rather quickly ,but thats a totally differnt ball game there ,
anyway i am using the RRP dual disk slipper i got off imbroken and its flawless ,but also tore up 2 spurs due to bearing failure in the bell, my bad ,,worn clutch pads ,
if you get the rrp dbl disk slipper then i would suggest getting the pastic first then upgrade to the metal later ,i still have my metal disk ,just havent grown the cahoona's to try to get my mesh perfect ,not that good at it yet ,lmao
but they are definate improvement over the stock pegs and spur

1 more thing i am geared very low for what i do 16t bell 72t spur ,i like the way low grunt ,i dont need the flat out speed but love the wheelie poppin power, but i do believe i iwill have to change some things with the new mill coming wensday ,i am getting the OS .18 cvrx

racin_38, let me know how the .18 is... I want to strap one into my brother's nitro rustler... just wondering if it is fast!

i am sure its going to be awsume
esp since it is a os i have had nothing but excellent results using os motors and it being rated at 1.35 hp should be a wild upgrade ,just blew my hair back that the trx 2.5 is only rated at .89 hp and i got that from a mag i was reading
i will let ya know as soon as i get'er in and broken in ,

I don't think you are being an ass...just re-stating something that has already been said. BUT "perfect" mesh is not necessary. As for how to get your mesh near-"perfect" there are a number of directions floating around that can help make what appears to be a difficult process into a very simple process.

BUT you are correct, if the mesh or alignment is not right you can chew up a clutch bell. Also, if you lose your mesh during some hard core running a metal gear set-up can go really ugly and provide you with a costly repair bill.

BUT I submit that if you have the sack to run with metal gears, take proper precautions prior to and after running, and keep your ride in good shape that a metal gear set-up is great.

Just realize that you can get similar performance from running the hard plastic gears (there are a number of different materials being used these days...).

very true skymaxx ,i agree
i think alot of ppl are thinking they will just go buy a metal spur and they done nothing more ot buy thinking(hit me here i am bulletproof) lol
but they need to do just as you stated take propercare of there rig and maitain it more when using the tougher spurs ,
honestly i have tried the solid RRP spur ,the RRP DDS w/both metal and plastic ,and with the metal i set my mesh just a tick too loose 1 time and after a few tanks the bell is sharpened like a razor ,pee'ed me right off ,but anyway i am done babbleing ,,lol
take care
rick
