Is there a better way to set the mesh than the paper? I have burned out way too many. 6 since I got it in december last year

i never use paper, every time i did i'd always end up with stripped spur gears or chattering down the road.....i always eyeball it, never have any problems.... you just want to make sure you have some play between the spur and pinion.

but then again, i've been in the hobby since the Tamiya Dirt Thrasher came out.

That's the feel I go for. Not tight, not loose, just in between. Maybe it's a fault in my car?

is your engine mounted right ?? maybe it gets loose ..or maybe its crooked a bit
do you jump it allot ?? maybe the slipper clutch is to tight and the gear gets chewed when you land with throttle on ...just a thought ;)

I don't jump alot, and I just put a new mount in like 2 months ago. I'll check the alignment of the engine just to be sure

If you do a lot of hard starts and spend a lot of time on grass, the clutch bell can get REALLY hot, and in turn will start to melt the spur.
You might want to consider a metal spur and a hardened CB.

Take off the engine and look at the mount, same problem was happening to me. I chewed up three in a day. I took off the engine, and a chunk of the mount fell to the floor.

agree'd with NitroRC,
mine did same thing, had a broken mount, it was on the inside under the engine , could not see it until i took engine out, put in new mount eye'd the mesh and no more stripped spurs:D

I just had it apart the day before, and the mount wasn't damaged I don't think, no parts were falling off anyway.

Maybe a month after I got it I hit a curb pretty hard. The only damage I could see was a broken front diff cover. I replaced that and it was good as new. I'm going to try running a new spur gear, and if that one burns up, then I'm going to strip it completely down and check the chassis for bends

If you hit it hard enough to break the diff cover, you probably bent the chassis a little. An impact that hard will bend and crack all sorts of things that will be hard to see. Put a drop of paint on the teeth of the spur and rotate it a couple of times and look at the contact patch of the spur and bell. It should be even, if it's uneven the frame is probably tweeked.

Thanks ch3, I'll try that. I really hope I didn't bend the chassis, but if it's only minor, I can bend it back right?

You might be able to bend it back, but it might be weaker in the spot where it was bent. If the chassis is bent it might be a good idea to save a bit of green to replace it.

For some reason, my engine locked up today. I found a bit of metal build up in the piston. I put the engine back together and it seemed fine.

Also, it's burning glow plugs like crazy. I thought it was too lean, but I richened it until it wouldn't run and backed it off until it would, but then it started making a funny noise. I think I need to seal my engine now that I had it apart

sealing the engine should be the first thing done on it ....as for your glowplugs ...if there was metal in your engine , it could be the cause ...pieces of metal might be hitting the plug and braking the filament ...make sure your engine is as clean as you can get it ;)

I saw a link to a video on some post on how to seal engines. Anyone have that link or remember the post it was in?
