i was wondering if anyone knew if a metal spur gear was a good mod because i keep having trouble with the plastic ones melting even though i have good mesh but i use my truck hillclimbing for like a 1 hr and a half without resting
 
It sounds like you have a mesh problem. ARe you seting the mesh correctly? Is it too tight or loose? Is the slipper too tight or loose?

I ran with one spur for a long time. That is hard bashing. 12-15 feet high peaks and 25 feet distances at times. I never had a problem I also used a cage to protect the goods.
 
AS Jon said check your mesh is off or your engine is moving, also make sure nothing is bent.

The only thing that will change with a metal spur is you will strip the clutch bell instead of the spur gear.
 
As the others have said, the mesh probably isn't right. If it apppears "melted" it's probably too tight. Loose will usually just rip the teeth off.
Properly adjusted, it should have .003-.005 backlash on the gear. An easy check is with a small piece of notebook paper(averages .003). Turn the gear by hand and insert the paper betwen gears. When correct, it will come out looking like an accordian with sharp crisp folds. Too loose and the folds won't be crisp, too tight and it will tear.
The only spur I wasted was due to screws coming loose. I haven't lost a spur in almost 3gal of running since I started checking tightness regularly. Hope this helps

This is a great habit to get into, you should regularly check all screws for tightness and stripping.
 
i think it may have been a little tight, and i also think a rock might have messed it up alittle bit also. i am just going to get another plastic one and to the time to ensure proper mesh and save my self $40. i also have another problem. i can't seem to get my slipper clutch to slip even when it is loose. i have tried adjusting and and stuff and still nothing.

Check your slipper pads to verify they are in tact. I have burned min up fast when they were on wrong.
 
I have run both plastic and metal spur gears. If you set your mesh well and check it often (like pre-run each time you run it...not each tank, but each day of running), then you can get by quite well with a metal gear. The problem is that if you do not have your mesh set right, the damage is usually more costly than with a plastic spur.

There are advantages to a metal spur gear that are not centered on strength of the gear, but for this situation, I'd recommend sticking with the plastic.
