i have some wobble in my spur gear, is that normal? i even replaced it with an aluminum and steel set. also, whats the best way to line up your engine nice and square with your spur to get a nice even tooth mesh?

The "Salvage" thanks you :surrender

I had the same problem with my spur gear, I realized that the HPI tool provided with the kit was reason it was happening. The tool was not fastening the nut with the proper alignment.

Remove the nut and try attaching it with a socket and ratchet.

Hope this helps, it worked for me.

I told my spur gear to straighten up!

my savage is used, and i dont have a tool, i have always used a socket....any other suggestions?
thanks tho, everyone has tried somethin different.

Yes, this spur gear wobble is normal. When it gets up to speed, the rpms will straighten it out. The gear is known as a floating gear and is one of the features that allows it to function properly.

great thread and skymaxx great answer solved a problem i was havin with out even havin to post a thread thanks guys

I've never had a huge issue with gear wobble, and I've got the dual pad unit on my savage. The only real issue I've had is the nut coming loose.

Loose nuts sounds unrelated to spur gears...=devil

The dual slipper set up might have a little more wobble; it might not. I used to run the Robinson Racing ring gears for spurs and used a little bit of blue loctite on the lock nut. Gear always stayed put at RPM, nut always stayed where I put it.

As for setting mesh, there are a number of good posts on the site for that. Here is my method...

"From another SkyMaxx post"

Setting gear mesh is very important to the longevity of both gears and the components driving and being driven by the gears.

Here's how to do the mesh check.
1. Loosen the screws that hold the motor mounts to the chassis plate (don't take them all the way out).

2. Make sure you have both spur gear and clutch gear on properly (since you've mounted the spur and the clutch is attached to the motor, you probably have little to worry about here).

3. Take the plastic bag that the spur gear came in (a ziploc bag will work just as well) and place one thickness of the plastic between the two gears.

4. Push the motor back into place so that the two gear compress on the plastic.

5. Tighten the motor mount screws (making sure that the motor mounts are as square to the chassis as possible...you want the gears to have as even a surface to surface contact as possible).

6. Pull the bag out. The gears should rotate freely and mesh together just right.

Hope this helps...

The nut problem was related to the spur slipping and taking the outter plate and washer with it. Cleaning the plate up with a dremel sanding drum, as well as putting a second washer on it, with grease between them (to create a slipping point), as well as some red high-strength threadlocker fixed the issue.

If anything, the only real issue I've ever had was the spur being slightly off-center, causing a variable 'gear lash'. Just enough to be annoying, not enough to kill spurs.

It does kinda sound unrelated... but if the spur is too loose in the slipper plates, that could cause overheating and melting of the middle area of the spur... Which could warp the gear, and cause some wobble.

Sorry about the confusion. Wasn't making a comment on the veracity of your statement. Was making an off color remark as to your issue of having loose nuts...read into it a little more than the literal meaning...

No doubt a loose retaining nut can cause all kinds of problems with regards to the spur gear. I was simply trying to drop some off color humor into the post. Sorry if it caused any confusion.
