I have a Traxxas T-Maxx 2.5, bought slightly used. I have noticed since I bought it that the spur gear looks warped. Is this normal? When I shut the engine off, push it on carpet, or roll it with my finger it makes this sound as well.

Operation is normal, I really don't notice any performance issues with this at all, just wanted to know if this is normal and if not what to do and what could have caused it, what to do about it, and what to watch out for in the future.

In this video I'm showing the sound, the warping in the spur gear, and that there is no forward or rearward play in the gear. The teeth are also fine, no stripping or damage. Anyay, on to the first video:

Sorry I can't hold the camera entirely still, I was well into my bottle of Don Julio Anejo. :)

Well, thats good to hear. I am learning about r/c, so I didn't want to let a problem sneek past me. I had a phobia about buying my first nitro 'used' but so far it has treated me well. I have kept an eye on the spacing and teeth on the gear and there have been no issues. Man it is hard to type without this spell check in Firefox, Mr. Julio is starting to make me a sloppy typist.

I guess I'm just looking for excuses to play with my camera.

REALLY!! thats normal? uhmm. i can't really put my 2cents in couse i dont have a t-max..BUT.. i would think that its warped. and when that gear is spinning at 20,000rpms it could possibly throw alot of stuff off balance.. i looked at the video pretty close and the shaft doesn't apear to be bent. i would think that if the slipper clutch was set a little too lose, it could heat up the spur and couse it to warp like that.. a new spur only cost bout $5,

I mean, I have no doubt that the gear is warped. I haven't taken the time to pull it off and lay it on a flat surface to see, but the beauty of it is that it is only a $5 part so no major issue...I just want to know what could have caused it if that is what the problem is. I mean, flukes happen in the factory so it is possible it was made that way as well. Either way, I'm sure it will be replaced soon, I plan to put gallons of fuel through this thing over the next few months...I can't seem to put it down it is addictive.

I will be getting an infrared temperature gauge soon so I will try to get readings on it while running it as well to see where it stands temperature wise.

I'm off to bed to enjoy my blue agave blend sleeping medicine. :)

I pretty sure thats normal mine does the same exact thing just watch it when you flip the truck because the motor jaired on mine and all the motor mount screws were tight and I went to start the motor and it started fine and when I hit the throttle and there went the gear the minute I hit the throttle I stop because my motor was running so high rpms and the gear was gone it ate the tips of the teeth off.

You aint driving hard enough if you aint breaking things:second_place:

Haha, thanks. I will drive it harder when it is broken in. I am treating it like a new engine because it was like new when bought. Really I can't drive it hard where I'm at now it is just an open grass field. My friend wants to build a track where he lives so we might make something to run ours at.

I broke, well...my fiancee, the front bulkhead I think. I'm not worried about it yet because it still works...when it breaks completely I will replace it.

What is the best replacement spur gear for this truck?

Go with a Robinson Racing spur gear. you might want to upgrade to a hardened steel CB as well. If you use a stock CB with an RRP Spur you need to be extra cautious of the mesh because the CB teeth will get pretty tore up.

My steel Robinson Racing spur gear does the same thing, had it on there for almost 4 years now and all is well.

sure looks screwed up though, but if it aint broke ,it will be, I mean don't fix it

I believe that the wobble isnt from the spur gear itself but rather its positioning on the "friction pegs" I investigated mine and pulled the pegs out and clamped the tensioner down on just the flywheel and fired it up to see if it remedied the wobble and sure enough did...

I imagine the contact with the bell causes the gear to deflect which then pushes the spur to the outside on the pegs and as it circles back to the opposite side it walks back to the center of the pegs
