Anyone use a spur gear guard on the bottom of their chassis ?
I can't find much in the way of aftermarket support for these things (would want one for a Storm). I see the potential for a rock or stick to make it's way in there and possibly stall the engine or worse.
 
I have never seen what you are looking for. But, I have to tell you that a stick or rock or whatever will not stall your engine if it were to get lodged in the main gear. It will stall if something were to get cought up in the flywheel. This has happened to me on a couple of occasions.
 
If the spur gear were to get jammed/locked from a stone or stick, would the clutch just slip ? Something would have to give I would think. I've seen them on other rides. In fact, the April edition of
R/C Car features and article on HPI's new nitro MT 2 and it shows a spur guard on the chassis bottom (pg. 54).
 
If the wheels stop turning, let off the gas. Just about anything you add to the bottom of the chassis will end up hanging on everything you try to go over. I've run my lightning on gravel, rough dirt, and other area with the kind of debris you mentioned, and I've not yet gotten the spur jammed. Is this a problem you're having, or just something you wanted to add to your ride?

There's no slipper set-up here, so no, nothing will give. You'll just burn the clutch.

Sorry, I did not see the April edision of R/C car, but now i'm curios.They may have done that considering the teeth on the gear are plastic.
 
No problem as of yet. It was the article that got me thinking. That's all. Didn't think I needed a failsafe until I wished I'd had one. But I think RR might be right. I can't tell from the article or pictures whether or not the spur gear is plastic. But if it is, that would make sense to protect the gear and not worry about damaging the engine. I've seen them on other buggies too, just can't remember where.
 
On my Hpi NMt it comes with a spur guard(just found out what it was after through it away 6 months ago) it is a piece of lexan.That i screw the the botom of it with the srews that go in to the Trans.And it wont get cought on and thing, So now that i figured out what it was for i am making one out of the steel that Staples Uses(that Red Stuff),(and yes i got a Trailer Load of it from when my dad built a Staples for the steel company he works for) and i am also working on Skids.

If you can make one that won't hang up, go for it. I've lost 3 spurs do to rocks now n my X-cellerator stadium truck. It's just way to vulnerable on my rig.

On mine I'm just going to cut a flat peice of lexan from body scraps and use bolts already in the chassis.
