RC Driving Style
What does everyone prefer a spool or open diff like stock i found out mine has a spool in it and wonder if i should go back to open diff or stick with spool i know the turning radius will increse with spool but want to hear what other people think

If you have a spool in front, take it out. Unless you are pulling or doing climbing competitions I would leave the stock style setup in the front. I leave the rear spooled, especially for on the track. Hurts me a little on launch, BUT, when I get stuck on the black drain tile I almost always break free. Because of the spool.

I don't have a spool, but I've seen them run. I won't get one for the simple reason that you loose turning radius and it's harder on the driveline parts.

Spool is only in the rear up front its still a open diff had it apart greasing it last night

Just curious, but why does it hurt the launch? I'm guessing you mean dead stop take off and not launching off a ramp.

A friend of mine just put a spool in his rear diff. He has a OS 21RG with dynamite cvd's. Hasn't run it since he put it in yet, but i'm sure he will this weekend.

What do you guys mean spool or diff.....lol.

I run "LSD's" front and rear with increased traction and general performance on and off road for general driving. I packed my diffs with this unbelieveably thick chit form www.badhorise.com...was pretty cheap to and the shipping is fast. Most of the principals that apply to the T-maxx, Savage and other Trucks apply to real Trucks and vice versa (actually it's rc drivetrains in general). With the spools you get a "locked diff" where equal power goes to both wheels regardless of traction loss on either tire. Like locked diffs on a real truck you don't want to run "lockers" on your rc on road and especially on the front.

The spools are also much, much harder on your drivetrain and the LSD's aren't. For offroad racing I like a spool in the rear and the LSD in the front but more often then not I'm to lazy to take it apart before a race so I have LSD's front and rear and still get increased performance. Like mentioned above, for low speed and low gear rockcrawling and hill climbing you want to run lockers front and rear and you want to take them off as soon as possible as again it's very hard on your drivetrain and you'll hate it on road. I've run the regular LSD diffs for rock crawling and it helps some but it's nothing like the spools.

If you want to experience some increased traction in genral definitley pack the diffs with the thick poop sold on the link above. You'll thank me later.

Now when is somone going to invent selectable diff lockers for the T-maxx so I can go from LSD to locked with the push of a button...wouldn't that be sweet.

Peace

Hey bro,

LSD ='s Limited Slip Differential. On T-maxx and real truck applications it makes a difference compared to a standard open diff and especially on wet and snowy roads but it's nothing like a real locked differential. Most people feelingsabout LSD's on real trucks are "it's better then nothing". ALL of my real sports car have an LSD on the rear and all of my real trucks have an ARB Air Locker front and rear.

My car also seems to handle high speed turns on and off road better with the packed diffs. How that helps some.

Peace

That it do.

I'm guessing with the heavy grease packed in with the spider gears is where you get your LSD function. But doesn't the grease expand with heat and end up squirting out everywhere?

SO far so good olds...this chit is definitley stickier and thicker then ANY auto grease.

"badhorsie Diff Lock Grease
Only the stickiest grease on the planet would be an ideal alternative to "spooling" your RC truck for off-road use. badhorsie Diff Lock Grease is that sticky! In fact, you will not find another grease stickier. Even the heaviest automotive grease doesn't come close. Easy to follow instructions are included. (1) tub is enough to do 3 to 4 diffs nicely".

I had to get that chit out of the tub with a knife and god forbid if you get it on your clothes..hehe. It's kinda a bitch to take everything apart and take your diffs apart but it was well worth it.

Peace

Not to beat a dead horse, but how stiff is it when it's 40deg and lower outside?

I live in northern illinois and plan on running all winter. I ran my xxx-nt all last winter, i figure what the hell. I bought it to use it, even if i freeze my damn figers and toes off.

Myself, I use Unlimited Engineering 7.5 LSD's They are viscous and I run 7000wt oil in the front and 1000wt in the rear.

The truck turns very neutral off the throttle and will oversteer on the throttle. Which means I can totally control how tight my truck turns based on how much gas I give it in a turn.

Myself and a friend of mine are the only ones that run them locally and well, we simply dominate. These diffs put the power to the ground any time, all the time all day long .....no matter how hard I hit them.
