Why is it the last? The last one ever or what?
The Shuttle is being retired for new technology. They are trading in their old 'trucks'.Ok maybe I'm lazy for not knowing but why are they ending?

see that is the part that pisses me off.. they arent..
obamas budget he announced monday, has no money for constellation. the constellation project, is what was supposed to replace the shuttle. this is the new crew exploration vehicle (cev) that lockheed martin has been building for the last 4 years. plus the new ares rockets that are supposed to lift it.
if obamas budget passes congress, it will put an end to constellation, and there will be no future manned space missions for the US in the foreseeable future. we will rely on other countries, and private companies to ferry astronauts and supplies to the space station until its scheduled end of life in 2020. Nasa is supposed to get a budget boost, to invest in companies who will develop vehicles to go to the ISS and for other near earth exploration, like large meteors, and possibly mars.
the original plan was to use CEV for trips to the ISS and eventually back to the moon. (this is the reason is resembles the appolo design). we were going to use the larger ares rockets to lift supplies to the moon, and build a habitable "base". This would be used for experiments, and as a refueling location for future maned missions to mars.
NASA has also developed a new and greatly improved lunar rover, that has an enclosed cockpit, and would allow extended exploration of the moons surface, without having to wear the suits, or rely on there limited oxygen supplies.
i know the people that live close to the cape, are probably worried, and we are too. The town i live in depends on johnson space center and the hundreds if not thousands of people employed there, in order to survive. If the government pulls the plug on constellation, there will be many layoffs, and this whole city may turn into a ghost town. :\
