Hey folks...

Got my new spur gear installed (see post about heat ruining the spur) and I brought the Savy to work today to play with it on my lunch hour (construction site next door!)...

I got a tank through it and towards the end of the tank the truck sounded like it was slipping a little. I thought the spur was going away again, but when I shut the truck down I saw the nut on the slipper backed off and the spur was slipping...

I didn't use loctite since, in theory, the LOCKnut should lock down on the threads, though you shouldn't reuse a locknut either.

So, do I put a NEW locknut on, or do I simply loctite it? Or should I get two regular nuts and double nut it with loctite?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions...

Never use loctite on the spur nut..
Just get a new nylock nut.And you will be good to go

the nylon part of the nut should hold it.. you may need a new one as it can get worn out.. maby try some blue or green locktight.. or two nuts

double nutting the shaft would virtually guarantee the slipper would not back off. the only thing that would keep it from losing it's adjustment was slipper wear and spring fatigue. i double nutted the props on a boat I built a long time ago and never, ever got a loose prop.

Well I double nutted it tonight and even though I didn't run it I tried to move the spur gear with my fingers and it moved easier than normal. I think I roasted the slipper pad. Damn, and I had good mesh on my first time replacing the spur too! :(

They should include a new nut with the spur since nylon locking nuts should be one time use anyway. Does it bother anyone else that a new slipper pad is four bucks and you can get a whole new spur gear with a new pad for the same price?

I guess I'm not running the Savy until the weekend again. I hate that the lhs is on the other side of town!

you might as well get the new spur, its a beoch to get that pad off cause I always CA glue mine to the spur gear, that stick back crap just doesn't cut it IMO

You could try scuffing the slipper pad a bit. Just take some rough sand paper and gently go over the pad to removed the glaze. It could hurt anything since your going to buy aother one anyway.

For once hindsight became foresight and I bought two spurs last weekend. So I do have a second one ready to go. But I might try your plan first Rex. I checked the pad when I had the nut and spring off (as best I could) and saw a dark ring around the outer edge of the pad, so I'm guessing the stainless slipper disk burnished the pad off. I'll try to scuff it, but I think it's going to be time for a new one.

What sucks is the spur gear that got chewed up only had about 12 tanks on it and the pad looked decent. I should have saved it to pull the pad off! There's that damn hindsight again! :(
