RC Driving Style
skidplates and motors question

I think people have asked this question numerous times..but its coming time for winter and I am gonna tear my maxx down and beef it up. I was looking at the rc-solutions skid plates https://tp-commerce.techpro.com/rcsolutions/shopexd.asp?id=4 for my maxx front and rear. I know people say to go w/ al cause it bends to easily. But does anyone have these and how well do they work compared to say RPM skids. I just do general bashing w/my truck (curbs,front tires on 1-1 veh. stuff like that..lol) but havnet gotten it to the point of taking it off huge jumps yet. sorry so long winded. Thanks for any help.

p.s. also what would a good replacement motor be on that I could just pretty much drop in. I was thinking sirio but have heard that once they get their money they dont really care, also the website says no warranty its aracing motor they can last 1/2 season to afew hrs. I need one that will last a while anyone know ofa good motor?...my 2.5 is fine now but the extra power is fun.

I would go with titanium. I have the hardcore ti skids and haven't regretted one bit.
 
for my maxx i just run the stock ones. i dont have bumpers on my truck so they work really well. if u it hard on the front or rear they just bend. besides if they do break it only costs me $5 to get a new one.

I think the happy medium is a set of RPMs. Keep a set of stockers lying around to use in case you break the RPMs and are waiting for their replacement policy.

Ti is good, but expensive. Stock is.......well, stock. RPM good, Napster bad.

The RPM skids actually mount over the stockers, you don't remove them. I like Titanium, over aluminum, and stock over aluminum. The aluminum ones will bend when you hit something, and each time you bend them back they will get weaker until they finally break.
 
Mike, a friend i bash with got a Fantom 18 motor for his Maxx, he really likes it. Tons of power and is real easy to tune and it blows my 2.5 away the clutch & flywheel bolted right up so switching was easy
 
I agree that the run of the mill aluminium will bend pretty easy BUT there are some alum skida that i had on my truck for along time (can't think of the brand right now) they were extra thick 5mm plates that were very durable. Check into these.....also titanium plates are very good!
 
RPM SKIDPLATES

Wouldn't run anything else...the TI is nice but it's not going to abosrb more impact on the lower of the car that will transfer to other components then the RPM Vinyl/plastic ones.

ditto, no dents, no bends, they just take all of the punishment that you can dish out. the nice part about it is they retail for $16.95 a set. sort of makes rc fun again.

Really, I payed like $21.00 for the full three piece set...hummm.

Those RPM skidplates will rip off screws and all before they break and RPM will replace broken ones if they do. Make sure you use a good threadlock on ALL the screws.

Titanium is nice but pricey and mostly for looks IMHO for skidplates and they don't look to hot after they get scratched all to hell. Again, Ti isn't going to give you the overall structural integrity and shock abosprtion that the RPM's will.

I dont have anything against the RPM plates they are pretty good,but having off roaded in a real(1:1) truck for many years you will quickly learn that the job of a skidplate is to protect the part that it is covering. You really dont want it to absorb the impact that much,you want it to deflect what ever you are hitting.titanium does a great job of doing this sence it is hardened enough to deflect and not bend or dent. They arent cheap though!

Not knockin the RPM's....just giving my view of skidplates

Sup dude, I totally understand where your coming from bro but you can't always use real truck analogies with RC trucks IME. YES I wouldn't run vinyl/plastic skidplates on my off road real trucks but if you wanted to quantify it your not driving your real trucks like most are driving their T-maxxs (if you jumped your truck the equivelent height in the air you'd destory it in no time) and my thinking is the same as yours excpet you want to deflect and absorb in the plates to keep the shock NRG from transfering to other components in your truck with less strength.

Actually, the more I think about it....even on real trucks the skidplate aren't really "deflecting" the shock NRG but absorbing some of it and keep the initial impact away from your transfer case, tranny etc. No skidplate is going to magically "deflect" (bounce away) shock NRG.

maxx, i'm not knocking what you are saying but i've personaly bent ti and al skids. i really like the ti for the weight factor but mine end up pretty thrashed. i liked the rpm's because they didn't bend, they just get scrached up and they are cheap eniugh to throw away without any wallet pain. let me know if i'm wrong because i'm in need of some very good ones for my new 21 conversion. please give us a recomendation! the rpm center will not fit and i like a lot of center coverage.
 
StretchM - Yeah, that sucks that RPM doesn't make a skidplate set that fits a .21 conversion.

Hey guys.....i do know what you are saying so dont think i'm tryin to say i'm right and your not cus thats not what i mean at all......i see your point but i guess what i was gettin at was i would rather have the truck bounce the plate off of a rock(or whatever it hits) than to have the rock go through the vinyl plates and damage the mech under it. I guess they would both have there advantages and disadvantages when you think of it.......

Stretch i hear ya about the longer chassis and plate fitting problems for the center plate......if you like the RPM style plates then maybe try to find somthing at the hardware store thats made outa' a tough vinyl and cut and custom make one! Hardware stores have lots of different rolls/strips of vinyl for various usages that you may be able to use(just a thought)
 
i appreciate the feedback maxx. sorry to be an old rag. what i acually preffer is my tranny to remain in my chassis. i probably going to have to spend some more $$ for skids this time. got any recomendations for a decent price on some skids that will take an a$$ beatting?
 
StrechM i have a starter box chassis on my maxx now so it dosent even use skids on it sence its a upper and lower deck chassis......but i had a hardcore titanium .21 chassis that came with the longer rear titanium skidplate,i dont know off hand where the plate is at but if you wanted it i would look around and see if i could dig it up for ya(you can have it if i find it). I know where the titanium chassis is but the plate is MIA at the moment..lol
(probaly not what you are lookin for but i dont have a use for it anymore)
