Side exhaust merely means the exhaust connects to the side of the engine and has absolutely no bearing where on the rc the exhaust goes after that, side back, front, straight up, or straight down...

The only thing you must do to run an exhaust out the rear for a side-exhaust ported engine is get the ride exhaust manifold for it. If you run the wrong kind of manifold it will not work quite right.

A caution on rear exhaust. If you do not allow for some drainage of spent fuel/oil, it may make its way back into the engine and hydro-lock or flood the engine. Just make certain the spent fuel/oil has a way to get out of the engine and exhaust.
