I always put my finger over the exhaust. Never had any problems doing it except for maybe a hot finger tip, lol.
when you (put the boot) to your crank it is travling up and down w/the compression in the mill. when is on the up stroke when you do this it will strech the rod. i wish i could explain this better to you.better yet show you pics of an engin after the front endhas been plowed in to the frame of a 1/1 car. causeing the motor to seize.Originally posted by NooP

IMHO what happens when you crank it over no lube there.
