I spent a LONG time slidin the motor back and forth... got the gear placement EXACTLY where I wanted it..... shredded the spur in about 30 minutes. Looks like I must have had it to tight.
I REALY REALY thought I had it perfect.

Is there a smart way to set up the gear lash?

I had it set so there was just BARELY a perceivable amount of play. If I helt the gear still on the engine you could JUST BARELY (realy) move the spur. Yes I spun it to all positions to make sure there were no high spots on either gear.

The spur gear got grinded just about smooth LOL so I guess it was too tight.

Smart way to set gear lash?

Use the paper method. Tear off a piece of notebook paper, run it between the gears. Tighten down the mounts. You should be able to pull the paper out without tearing and have it look folded like an accordion.

Your slipper could also be too loose causing the spur to heat up excessively and in turn melting the teeth off.

I upgraded to an aluminum spur, and used the paper method.

Bout 5 tanks of fuel through her now.

I used to shreed them every once in a while so what I did was make it so there is little to no resistance between the clutch bell and the spur gear and I haven't shreeded one in probably 3 or 4 monthes; it also lowered my run temp.
