Is it my understanding that big bore shocks will eliminate the problem with shock caps popping off?

Just get aluminum caps first. That helps as well. (its more cost effective) In the long run though you can still strip the threads on your shock bodies and that can be just as frustrating.

The nice part about the big bores is the entire shock is alum. Less chance of stripping. I LOVE my Big Bores. I put the RC Raven Dual Rate springs on mine with the RPM Dual Rate plates inside. KILLER SETUP!

Hey FT I would have to say on the T when you consider the cost of going to 4 sets of caps you looking around 30 bucks. That is a lot of money just for the aluminum caps. I run aluminum caps on my E-Pede and that works great on it never had and issue. I did recommend to a friend the get the Caps when he got his E-Maxx and after doing so It became apparent for the money. That he probably should have used the money for better over all shocks just because of the investment for just he caps. I mean on a pede 2 sets 14.00 not bad and its not near as heavy but on the maxx I think its definatly worth putting that money towards some better shocks instead of just doing the caps.
I run the Big Bores on my Maxx and they work pretty well I am going to change out the stock springs because I dont really care for them.
You can get the BB for at stormer for 64.00
Or the Associated aluminum set for 59.00
Lastly some one here I know Backspur can chime in and tell you what you need to run the duratarx evader shocks which are essentially losi knockoffs. X

The Associated Aluminum set comes with plastic caps...the aluminum caps are sold separately...so that ups the price about $15 dollars.

I run the Associated shocks on the SkyMaxx (MuddyMaxx from this past weekend), and they are just fine. After moving to those shocks with Aluminum caps, I have had only one rebuild and not a single blown cap. It is definitely worth the money...especially if you fly your T as much as I like to.

Oops...almost forgot. One other weakness of the Associated (easily overcome by the crafty) is the springs that come with them. They are smaller in diameter than most springs made for the T-Maxx. I used the spring retainers from my stock shocks and the upper spring retainer from the Associated set, and like most people went with a better set of springs (I use a mix of Trinity Blues and Trinity Blacks on my T).

Look at the Dynamite shocks as well. They are threaded all the way down and can be dialed in VERY easy for racing. Depending on whether or not you hit the track, this may not be as important. When I just re-built my Traxxas Big Bores I added in bigger AE spacers to get a hair lower. This will help me with the high speed rollovers around a hairpin slide.

The Trax BB also have Titanium Nitride coated shafts which I honetly reduce abrasions. No matter the shock I always choose a nice set of shock socks (for the TMaxx since it takes the most abuse).

By all means, get the Big Bores if you can throw down the cash. While you are at it, get the RPM plates and a better set of springs as well. 50wt oil all the way around with Heavy plates seems to be a good combo. But I am also using the progressive springs. If the Big Bores are 'tuned' right from the word go, your unsprung weight values will be where you want them.

Thx guy's for the info, I will plop down the cash and get the big bores for both my T's

hhhmmmm, think I will pass the info along to my wife, those big bores should make great stocking stuffers :D

I'm running four Duratrax Evader rear shocks on my Race-Maxx. They work great after a little modification. To get them to bleed properly I had to cut a groove in the threads on the cartridge, so the the excess oil would bleed out. This feature is built into the Losi cartridges. I also use four o-rings instead of two. This allows me to go longer between rebuilds.
I've used the stockers with aluminum caps, the Associated's, the Big Bores, and the Losi style shocks. Personally, I prefer the Losi's. They seem to be easier to build and maintain. The stockers with alum. caps are just slightly better than stock on a T-Maxx. They work fine on my N-Pede, though. The Big Bores won't pop, but they always seemed to leak a little around the seals. I hated the way the AE's built. I didn't keep them long. Plus, I've seen the plastic caps pop off them. I think I'm gonna stick with the Losi's for an 8 shock set-up. I've been considering four 1/8 scale shocks on my race truck, though.

Here some pics of the Duratrax shocks:

I am using the Dynamite/Losi threaded body shocks and I love em. Only thing is the springs that come with them suck so I used Trinity blues and the stock retainers since the Dynamites are slighty smaller.
