You guys might remember this pic from before. The dual-disk brake mod recommended by UE when I put their diffs in. That front disk rides pretty much on the edge of that hex, doesn't it?

This worked great for a while until the front edges of the hex started grinding away the back of the front disk because that hex just isn't thick enough. The shoes themselves don't do a perfect job of keeping the disk squarely aligned where it belongs and now I have serious binding problems.

Has anybody seen this before? Were you able to find a thicker brake hex? It's not that I didn't push that rear shoe back as far as I could. The brass piston was shaved until it was flush with the tranny case.

I haven't heard any complain about the few different dual brake disc sets being made for the Savage. Perhaps you could use one on the T-Maxx. I am not sure how thick the Savage hex is.

I had the exact same issue with mine and dropped the use of two pads.

You may want to see if any of the aftermarket pads are thinner. Take a micrometer the the LHS with you.

Another thought is to get CF pads and sand them down a bit on all 4 sides to give you about .5 MM of clearance. When you take into consideration 4 surfaces to work with you wont be taking to much off any one side. If you needed even more you could lap all 4 sides on the metal caliper pads as well. If you needed, you could also reduce the thickness on the center caliper pad by 1/2.

okay SixV... this sounds like the voice of experience...

I wish they had a picture of it. The stock Maxx hex leaves a bit of slop around the UE drive cup. Is it a smaller bore as well?

yes the SM wide hex fits really nice around the SM drive cup. I ran one for a short time right before I went to a JT hybrid chassis. I never had luck running dual disks on the stock hex. I used to run a super wide hex made by a guy that goes by the screen name BBC402 on the UE fourms but that hex is overkill and is long enough to run 3 brakes on it! The UE one worked great for the short time I was running it. the brake never slipped of the hex.

Convincing argument there, Six! Thanks!

Where do you live out there in the burbs?

I was raised in Arlington Heights and Buffalo Grove.

Eddy, I thought about your suggestion but I like this one a lot better!!

McVick, that Savage hex turned up the most Google hits (next to wheel hexes). Couldn't trust myself to buy Savage parts for a Maxx.
