After a long winter, I decided to get my SH 28 installed and broken in today.

My initial impression when I opened it out of the box was good. In my opinion, the only thing that screams of cheap is the pullstart. The rest of the engine looks as good as any comparable .25-.28.

I've been trying to find some good threads on needle settings and gearing, but I haven't found many. So I slapped on a 17t CB and a 47t spur - based on the new K4.6 gearing - thought that would be a good start.

Initial needle settings were at 3.5 turns out. I took them to 4 to be on the safe side. Well, she fired up on the 10 or so pull and did a great job breaking in. (So far, I like the pullstart thing after dealing with rotostarts - nothing extra to carry around and lose in the excitement.) Anyway, I started dialing her in to about 3.25 turns after 6 tanks. The temperatures are still low; can keep my hand on her for a few moments. Surprisingly enough, the performance is already close to a finely tuned 25. I'm going to keep dialing the 28 in on Monday, but I was wondering if anyone had some final needle settings?

BTW, I'm liking this engine so far. Seems easy to tune and just plain wants to run..

my k46 run superb at hsn 2 3/4 to 3 turns out, and the lsn 1 1/8-1 1/4 turns from flush with body. I'm not sure about your engine but, the 72 degree temps and dry air of so cal helps.

Well. I have her dialed in now. The SH 28 has seen at least 12 tanks of gas. Still running the 17t / 47 t combo. Wheelies are occasional (the gearing is for speed) and she holds a tune very well.

So far I am happy with this engine. However, I would have to say that the 3.5 - 3.6 HP is overrated. If the old S 25 is 2.5HP, this one is somewhere around 3 HP.

I would love to see this engine go head to head with a k4.6. I think it would be close. In fact, I may pop one in and try it out..
